And it'd be protective as fook! She wouldn't need to guard either, that mimic would be "Protect momma, eat the bad guys!"
Imagine the conversations, "Uh...Fluttershy? Why's your coin purse growling? "Oh that's Mimi, he's mad someone tried to pickpocket him"
*Twilight rubbing her sore bandaged fingers* "I said I was sorry! Sheesh! I wanted to see if I could!"

two weeks later she goes to open a drawer, her hand sticks, and she gets pulled onto it, and it starts licking her like an over affectionate puppy. So it's an awkward hug with it's slime adhering her to it, she's cooing about it being a good boy, fooling mother like that, meanwhile she's just trying to pull away.
