Chapter 23 - Growing Up Hoofbun
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
Flopsy both does some growing up, and reflecting on what it was like to grow up as a hoofbun. Well, maybe "grow up" isn't the right term, since she was created as a full adult. But still, we get a nice look into her early life! How do you get used to being a Living Construct that follows orders, when your soul and your inaccessible memories are used to being a free person? Well, it certainly helps to have a Master who's willing to respect you and your boundaries, and genuinely wants you to be happy too.
There's kind of a lot going on in this chapter, but there's also some stuff that's happening multiple times. There's been bits of it building up here and there, but here it really beat Flopsy over the head, to the point where she had to discuss it with Dr. Farley.
...Who toooootally believes she was asking for a "twin sister", of course he does. Why would anyone suspect anything else? (Side note, it's frustratingly difficult to get a therapist to not ask questions that end up making Flopsy reveal stuff that makes it hard to keep that misunderstanding going, while still making them seem like a therapist. I hope I did a good job with that. >.> )
Also, that scene with Zach's Mom was incredibly surprising. I did not expect Flopsy to do that, but she saw Beverly was hurting and scared, and was like, "Oh, I recognize that. She needs a hug. Guess it's up to me." ^_^
(Several of these scenes were supposed to be short, and ended up long. Plus an unexpected scene came up. So this beats the previous chapter for "longest Flopsy chapter". Hopefully they can get back on track, or I'm not gonna have room for them all in the book!)

I know your writing sometimes goes in completely unexpected ways, but it was a pleasent surprise to see the flashback with her master. Interesting to see him instead of just having Flopsy talk about him
Also nice to see Anna/Tsarina get some magic in her human form. And maybe instead of throwing Beverly into the Old Navy, do it with Samantha, she deserves it more
Also looking forward to seeing how Dr Farley reacts to meeting the "twin sister". Would he admit that he thought it was an "asking for a friend" type of situation?

The flashback was not in the original plan, but I realized the "You don't control him" bit set up a flashback. They're rare, but they can be nice. He's a good bean, even if he has no idea what he got into when he started this.
Tsarina has water powers, which is why in her first appearance, she had wet hair when she turned back. Anna having water powers, that... That surely isn't going to be worrying at all, right?
I think Dr. Farley would be the type to admit when he realizes he made a mistake.
"Oh! There really IS a twin sister!"
"Uh, yeah?"
"Sorry, it's just... I thought you were 'asking for a friend.'"
"No, I was asking for my sister. I said so."
"Yeah, but 'asking for a friend' means... um... Never mind."

Yeah, her using magic as a human, totally nothing to be conserned about there. You totally wouldn't have her slowly turn into Tsarina like Tola's turning into a dragon in Princess, right?
Definitely going to be an experience when they meet, and Ben explaining what "asking for a friend" means
