part 5 You are here.
The next day, Todd went to work as usual though he felt rather empty inside. He couldn't understand why he was allowed to live when a good man like Mr. Agapov had to die. He was blaming himself rather than the monster.
Had he of not left that note behind for Darlene then Mr. Agapov would still be alive, Anya wouldn't be heartbroken, and in his own mind he thought everyone else would be better off if he had been taken out instead.
His guilt far outweighing his gratitude for having been saved from the beast. He didn't stop for lunch, but continued working through it fixing as many things as possible in his repair business throughout the day.
He returned home after everything was taken care of, to tell his roomate Darlene what he tried to confess to her the night before: That he loves her.
He didn't expect her to reciprocate that love but he wanted it to be known. Figuring he didn't have much to lose at this point, now was as good a time as ever.
He came with a bag of her favorite candy and knocked on her bedroom door, she answered: "Kommen sie rein, es ist unverschlossen." She said while putting on her purple eye shadow. Upon entering he saw her wearing a lovely green minidress, her fur smelling of a gentle yet sweet perfume.
Todd: "Wow, you look amazing Darlene." He said having not seen someone look so beautiful in a long while.
Darlene: "Wie lieb von dir, I was getting ready for my date with Stephanie."
While he knew Darlene and Stephanie were dating off and on he had forgotten that they were going out tonight. At this moment he wished there were a hole in the floor to swallow him up to escape his own foolishness.
He couldn't very well confess his feelings that he'd been trying to hide until now.
Realizing he'd been quiet for too long he said: "Oh right, my bad. Didn't mean to interrupt you getting ready."
Darlene: "No worries, I was about done anyway. What's up?" She said looking as lovely as ever.
Todd: "Oh uh.. It wasn't anything important, I just got you a bag of cherry sour balls on the way home." He then handed her the bag. Darlene: "Aww, how thoughtful of you." She then got up and gave him a little hug. "Any plans for the evening kleiner mann?"
Todd: "No, uh no plans this evening. Just going to take care of some cleaning I've been putting off." Just then the conversation was interrupted by Stephanie's car horn in the driveway.
Darlene: "Oh! Ich mache mich besser auf den weg. As much as I love her, she can be awfully impatient."
She gave Todd a little scratch behind the ear before rushing off for a fun night.
Meanwhile Todd was left all alone as he was getting used to by now. He decided now was as good a time as any. He was going to go look for the monster that had terrorized the town and killed Mr. Agapov and he was going to try and avenge him. Getting his pistol that he kept locked in a little wall safe, and a headlamp since it was getting dark he readied himself and went out. Using his fairly good sense of smell he tracked her down to her cave, finding what he assumed to be her over in a pile in the corner. Rather than sneaking up on her, he had hoped if he called out she would attack him, only bringing the gun to give the illusion that he died fighting.
Todd: "This is for Ivan!" He yelled out causing her to stir, hoping he would have the same grim fate as so many before him.
When she turned to face him it wasn't the skull-headed monster he had seen before. In her place was a blue-eyed doe with antlers, tears running down her gentle face. She then spoke up: "For Ivan? Y-yes please take me down little dog." As she approached him on her knees. Todd holstered his weapon and said: "What on Earth? Who are you?"
With tears still running down her face she said: "I am Wysteria, formerly the monster of Bakersville. Please shoot, I don't deserve to live after all the lives I've taken."
He shook his head: "I can't shoot a doe, I came for a monster. And you don't exactly fit the part."
Wysteria: "B-but it was me that killed him, and so many others over time. What year is it anyway?"
Todd: "Well you certainly sound like her, same points on your antlers too. The year? 2024, why?"
Wysteria: "Odds bodkins, I've been like that for 202 years..."
Todd: "200 years? Wow." He sat down on the cave floor beside her. "So do you turn into the monster like a werewolf in a bad movie or what?"
She shook her head and said: "No sir, I've been that that thing all these years. Any chance you could take me to the sheriff so I can be put away?"
Todd: "I guess, come on."
Wysteria: "You sound saddened, why is that? Don't tell me you came here to die."
Todd said not a word to that, not wanting to commit to it. Todd: "Let's... let's just go. Wysteria right?" She trailed right behind him back to his car.
Wysteria: "I've never ridden in one of these horseless carriages before, oh my the seats are much softer than my old buckboard."
Todd: "Yeah, a lot of things are softer and easier than they were in your day." He started the car, and headed back to town with the antlered doe in the passenger seat. "So, Wysteria what happened? How did you turn back, how did you become that creature in the first place?"
She dropped her head and said: "I became THAT when I I ate my fiancé's corpse. Had we of not went in that damnable cave we would have been wed. He wanted to show me a rock formation, but the cave collapsed. We lasted as long as we could on our picnic lunch and he succumbed first, I hate to say it but I couldn't stop myself from eating his meat... It was so so.. I hate to say it but in that moment it was delicious and I hate myself for doing that, and all the pain I've caused since. As to how I turned back, I have no idea."
Todd: "I had something similar happen myself, only she came to her senses before I- Sorry I brought up painful memories for the both of us. For your sake, I hope the courts take it easy on you." He took her to the police station and she was booked and held for trial.
And Todd just went back to his cold, now empty, house to get some rest and continue with his lonely life tomorrow.

Well, I mean happy is relative. It's a happy ending compared to getting eaten alive by a Wendigo, even if he's still a lonesome little raindrop.
Possibly working on a little split where we see things from Darlene's pov of this evening.
Todd may visit Wysteria later on in prison, or she may get off with a light sentence due to the paranormal nature of her crimes. I've yet to decide on that.
