Just a little preview of a set of illustrations I'm doing for a flash class project. The series is called Urban Dieties, and its a kind of allusion to the idea of ancient deity cults but in a modern setting. I thought it was coming out nicely, so I'll leave this here since I'm done with the drawings. Now moving on to butchering it up to put into the animation x-x I will scrap this soon!

quick spell check ('cause I'm anal that way) Do you mean 'deities' ? Unless both spellings are correct, then I'm a dolt who corrects people even tho it's not her first language.
Also these rock, have a cool aztec/mayan vibe to them, but the druggie deity shouldn't be that scary... at first sight. ._.

The one with the bongo.. the setting tells me 'friends blazing one and having fun' but the god and its back tells me 'this is the psychedelia dude, who then should be a lot more colorful' tho I get that mushies being natural things they come from a brown dude.. dunno, this is obviously your vision and it should conform to your standards.
I didn't think of it that way and you're totally right, I suppose natural psychedelics aren't as 'colorful' as anything synthetic, but I Haven't had much experience with psychedelics yet so shows what I know. So is the one in the lower right standing in for alcohol? The barfing leads me to believe so
Partially. The scenes as they are represent groups of drugs that are similar in nature...I'm quite intrested in drugs and drug culture and how they affect people. I have a friend who is a major inspiration for all of this that has pretty much tried EVERYTHING, and has many interesting stories to tell.
Also the last panel with the dragon is called God of Tar, he's generally the hard street drugs that do alot of harm. He's based off of a heroin theme: opium poppys, dazed expression, track marks on arms, and brown tar seeping from its head. The tar is a reference to how some heroin looks as its being cooked, but I only found that out from looking up slang terms for it for reference. But yes he's also representative of the more devistating of drugs, including alcohol and crack. Drugs people generaly end up "worshipping" which ties into the whole theme.
Uhmmmm yeah so I do ALOT of research for things I draw, apparently XD Sorry for rambling. But I just LOVE questions!

Research is wonderful! More people should research it up all the time, I mean, sometimes even the most complicated things aren't researched. Then again, few kinds of research are as fun and interesting as drug research XD
That said, if the focus IS drug deities, wouldn't that title be better? Urban deities has kind of a broader scope and at least in my case it didn't make it any easier for me to spot the links to drugs and all in each of the panels. But then I'm an idiot, so take that with a grain of salt. (I only recognised the peat one right away, the rave one did made me think of MDMA, but thinking of 'urban' deities I thought it could be the rave god, not specifically the hallucinogens deity)
I agree with all of your reasoning behind the tar dude (haha yeah, it's a broadish kind of term for H) but like I said, until I started thinking seriously about drug links I saw the symbolism better.
I love asking questions and seeing the motivation/working behind arts, so sorry If I keep pestering you!

Thanks, yeah, research is really the key to effective artwork. The more you use reference, the more complex and rich an image can be, in my opinion.
Also I named it obscurely on purpose...I left the clues there for people who are intrested in that kind of thing, but its named Urban because of the setting and the feel and I'm still trying to personafy different groups of people/users with the gods, too. That and, this is a project for school. I dont want people thinking I advocate anything that might get me in trouble. x-x and you know how dumb people always intepret things in the most blunt way possible...so its best to keep it behind curtains, so to speak.
