TUNIC Narrative Guide - Act 4, Part 3: Learning to Seek
Summary: Join the Ruin Seeker (that's our protagonist fox!) on his journey through a strange and vaguely familiar land. His inner thoughts are laid bare as we explore the unknown. Each step brings new mysteries to solve, new challenges to face. - This story is intended as a companion piece to the video game TUNIC, but can also function as a guide if you are stuck or a teaser to get you interested.
If you've reached this point and you haven't faced off against your final foe, turn around and leave now. There are spoilers within these pages that will negatively influence your experience with the game.
I'm still uncertain how to walk The Golden Path, but at the very least, my current objective is clear. Seek fairies, claim treasure. Easy enough. My next destination is inside the Sealed Temple, in front of the three-fox statue.
Looking around, the floor tiles catch my eye. What was once mere decoration now holds new meaning. I begin to trace. Again, the design is mirrored, but this one is much more simple than the last. I visualize the path with my inner Holy Cross.
And nothing happens. I try it from the other direction. Still nothing. Though, I do think I know why. This design has something different about it. Aside from the start point and end point being a little more undefined, there's this extra line towards the top. With so many things suddenly having meaning, perhaps this line has a meaning of its own as well?
I try a few different things. First, I take it literally. After tracing up, I add a left and a right before continuing with another up. Nope. Then I try to hold the motion for longer. No. Reverse? Still nothing. What about a repeat?
I jump backwards in surprise as the chest materializes inches from my snout. Looks like I figured out the answer. Line equals repeat. One up became two. Inside the chest, another rainbow fairy. This one is much less... vocal.
Discovery: A cross within a Holy Cross line means to repeat that input.
My next seek sends me south to the Old House. Inside, I spot an obvious patterning on the curtain. Having already figured out the meaning of the line, this one is solved very quickly. A third fairy freed.
I seek again and I'm led south to a solid wall. Had I led a different journey, this moment may have left me confused. But no, I know exactly what to do here. Three flowers? Boom Bomb time! The wall crumbles and I walk inside.
What I'm met with is one of the more confounding things I've seen in all of my journey thus far. A golden cube floats in the center of the room. As I stare at it in disbelief, it begins to rotate. Right, up, right, up, right, up. Oh, so that's how it is. Again, I turn to making a chalk doodle.
What a strange place. All of these mystical golden objects. The obelisk, the fairies, the chests. I wonder if the miscellaneous broken slabs of gold will also lead to a fairy. If I see them again, I should make a note of what is on them.
The next fairy is to the west. Along the way, I spot another bombable wall with some replacement bombs inside. I lock onto a nearby post and move to lash towards it when something catches my eye below. A staircase that I didn't notice previously, hidden behind some bushes. I'm in no hurry, so I decide to poke my muzzle in.
So close to the entrance I almost miss it entirely is a chest. The golden coin within it is added to my collection, not that equipping another card will be much use to me in tracking down fairies.
With that pocketed and out of my way, I find a room with some privacy boards and some bells. I playfully smack the nearest bell, and then the next, but nothing happens. I walk to the center and stand on what seems to be a small stage. I'm no dancer, so I go back to exploring. On the left side, I stumble into a hidden chamber with yet another privacy board. I check behind it and feel a tingle. I shake my head and where normally I see orange, I now see pink!
Guah! What happened?
I run around in a circle and end up behind the board again. Another tingle. Now it's bright red! I return to the main room and duck behind the closest of the boards, and the next tingle elicits a sneeze. When I open my eyes again, my nose is now white! Startled, I lash out and smack the bell, and with a blink, my nose is black again.
Once I calm down, I return to treating my surroundings with patience and logic. Walking behind the board again, my nose turns pink. I circle it again, and now it's red. I see, just like my hair. Again, purple. Blue. Aqua. Green. Yellow. Orange. Black. Gray. White. Then finally, back to normal.
After some further testing, all of the privacy boards work mostly the same. Three follow the order above, changing my hair, nose, and bandana. The other two adjust my tunic and my fur color. Those have a different set of choices, but in general it's the same process. If I want to return to my normal self, I just whack the bells.
Discovery: A hidden room exists where the hero's colors can be changed. Circle the boards to change, and ring the bell to reset.
I settle on my new appearance. One to channel my inner void. Black fur and features, with a yellow tunic and scarf.
My quest continues. Feeling like a new me, I head outside and seek. The golden fairies guide me to the fountain, where I look around for anything indicating directions. I find nothing. No lines, no arrows. Nothing on the inside. However, there are blue tiles scattered around the edges. It doesn't look like text, but perhaps it has another meaning.
As my eyes dart from grouping to grouping, it clicks that each group holds a different number of tiles. Perhaps following that thought can lead me towards a solution?
Discovery: Some Holy Cross puzzles will require counting.
Success! That's five completed out of twenty on the list. Now to find the next one, somewhere to the south. Under the bridge? Oh, I remember this place! I got the Hourglass here, not that I use the thing. I remember being curious about the pattern on the wall. Another mirrored one. I know the right side is correct, but I wonder if the left side would also work. May as well try it.
Discovery: Mirrored puzzles can be solved with either half, meaning that some puzzles have multiple valid solutions.
Rather than award me with a golden chest, this pattern instead moved aside the entire wall. Stepping past it, I find myself floating in the darkness. Illuminated before me is a large tower with nooks and crannies that wind their way to the top. Once I arrive, I can only stare out into the unnatural darkness. The seeking spell is leading me to this very spot, but nothing is here.
It's only then that it dawns on me the tower itself holds the solution. Climbing again to the bottom, I make notes of the path I take as I go. Again reaching the top, I channel the path through me. Nothing, I've missed something, made a mistake somewhere... Oh. Of course, the cross lines. Those sections like the one below me, they are repeaters. Let's try this again...
My next destination is a square island with flowers on it. In fact, this is the exact spot noted in the memo on page 52. This one follows the rule that connecting the dots in a line makes a pattern, just like the seeking spell.
The next fairy is underneath the next overpass along the beach. I remember this place, too. I had to navigate through the void with invisible barriers halting my passage. In the center was a chest with a lot of shinybits. For a moment, I almost forgot about the hidden walls, as my laurels allow me to zip clean through them, but somehow there's supposed to be a fairy in this room.
As I fumble my way through the blackness, I realize, like the tower before, there is a puzzle hidden within the path I'm taking. I take notes, then channel the path through my soul.
Further along the beach I spot a piece of a golden monument. I trace it out and try to recall where I've seen other pieces. There's two on the way to West Garden, and one other on the way to the Cathedral. I'm not sure if that's all of them or not, but it something tells me it's important to keep this in mind.
The next fairy is in, surprise surprise, yet another beachside cave. I wondered in my early exploration why there were so many strange things scattered along this shore, but to think they were holding such complex secrets. Inside this one, the room spins with a dazzling light. It's immediately clear with my knew knowledge that this one is another hidden pattern, but something tells me this will take me a little while to solve.
Slowly, one line at a time, I navigate through the confusing maze of lines on the wall. Rather than try to track the shape as a whole, I instead record whether the line turns to the left or to the right relative to the current segment of the line. Once pieced together, the resulting shape is much simpler than I expected it to be.
My next fairy is further up the cliffside. I wind my way upwards and forwards, until I come to a small tunnel. Within, something catches my eye. On the wall is a collection of lines, mirrored along the center. I try my seeking spell, but the golden fairies wander around aimlessly. If not a fairy, what does this puzzle do? Only one way to find out.
The wall slides open and inside is a chest shimmering with moonlight, resting in the dark emptiness. The material is the same as the walkways out towards the Cathedral, one of a fleeting, ethereal nature. Its contents are similarly strange. It holds a golden figure - a rock with a moustache wearing a top hat.
After collecting it, I try to see if it has some sort of use, but even stranger is the fact that it has vanished from my possession. I make a mental note, sure, but with the way this world has been throwing mysteries at me, it's just another one to add to the growing pile.
Unfortunately, this wasn't even the right path to get me to the fairy. I ascend a little further and find a place that I can teleport across, sneaking my way through a route that would not be accessible in my early adventures. Then again, before hand there were wooden ladders.
My search has led me to a wind vane. Below it is a plaque with symbols on it that I don't know how to read. Great, now what? I look over it trying to find a pattern, and I notice that it's the same four symbols repeated and placed in different orders. I also have the context clue of this unique wind vane. They normally function as a way to communicate which direction the wind is blowing, though this one seems to be missing the wind catcher.
If the two are connected, perhaps these symbols are just compass directions. Opening my booklet, I flip through its pages. I'm almost certain I remember a compass on one of these pages. Here, page 34, the Atoll map. So, the one with the dot is east, the one that looks like a broken E is west... Okay, got it. Time to put it all together.
Another easy success! If I hadn't recognized this for what it is, however, it may have left me completely stumped. Then again, the only thing these symbols could have represented are the four directions in one way or another. I should be more confident in myself. I've come this far, after all.
The next trapped fairy is to the north. Following the golden trails, I come to another grid of flowers, near the entrance to the Eastern Vault region. Yet another easy puzzle, at least conceptually. It does take me a little while to piece together the exact details.
My next fairy is trapped further north. I scale the cliff and I'm led into a tiny cave with nothing in it. After seeking again, the golden fairies push me towards a hidden alcove in the back. After a long trek through darkness, I spot a glow to my left. A rudeling is patrolling along a tiled floor. Something prevents me from heading over and giving him a big hug with my sword.
When he reaches the end of his patrol, he crosses the room diagonally, giving a clear indication of a beginning and an end. Thus, the answer is again easy! I just need to copy his movements, but it does take a little while to doodle out his path.
The golden fairies now lead me across the entire Overworld, all the way over to the Western Belltower. They congregate just below it, so I whip the metal post to drop down and stare at the wall. Disguised within the moss is a start and an end. I quickly trace out the line.
Nothing happens. I use the seeking spell again, confirming I'm at the right place. It couldn't be anything but this rather obvious marking on the wall, so what am I doing wrong? I try again, thinking a bit of dirt on a tile could be a repeater, but that fails as well.
So, instead, I put my paw to the marking itself and follow it from the start to the end. As I reach the edge of the wall, I am shocked to find that the moss continues even further, out of sight! So this is why it was failing. There was more than what was obvious. I make a few adjustments to my notes and try again.
Success! That's thirteen rainbow fairies freed from their golden prisons. I channel the power of the seeking spell, and the golden fairies again come to my aid. However, this time, they flitter around aimlessly as though there's nothing left to be found. I check page 48, finding satisfaction with how many are marked as located, while finding that those which remain are all clearly defined in their locations.
It looks like I have some traveling to do.
Current Goals
★ Seek out and rescue as many fairies as possible.
★ Seek The Golden Path.
★ Share my Wisdom.
Author's Notes: The fairies! They were one of the most fun parts of the game for me. Revisiting the old areas, being led around to find these secrets-hidden-in-plain-sight. Some of them were really creative and unique.
Technically, you only need ten fairies in order to reach the second ending. However, since that's not clear, I'll be collecting all of them. No sense picking and choosing when I plan to eventually cover all of the secrets.
Speaking of secrets, did you know the fairies actually hold a second secret? Maybe I'll get the chance to share that knowledge if I can find the time for Act 5.
I hope that all of the fairy puzzles look correct to people. If there's some automatic emoji conversion happening, it may cause some formatting issues. A few are imperfect even beyond that, but I did my best to make them all legible and interesting. See you soon for the other half of the fairies!

(Fairy List #3)
