A high shutter speed should not cut down detail, it should freeze motion and show more detail! If I could have used a higher shutter speed I would have, but flash photography needs shutter speeds slower than 1/200s on most Canon gear, and I usually set my camera to 1/160s just to be safe. That said, the flash duration itself also helps capture detail... by setting the power to a low setting on my strobes I get a flash duration much shorter than 1/160s, which stops the motion a bit. Using speedlights instead of studio strobes can get the flash duration down to 1000ths of a second for crazy stopping power, but at the expense of brightness.

Neat :) It's been a while since I've gotten to play with a professional camera though. Now I have an older Kodak Easyshare DX590. It has the same ability to mess with the settings as a regular SLR but Iv'e been so long out of practice I'm starting to forget how to set f-stops and shutter speed to get certain looks.
Heck, if I wasn't obsessed with cameras, I'd forget that stuff too! Lately I've been practicing so much it's becoming kind of second nature... I'm not using my flash meter as much, and zeroing on something useful after one or two adjustments based on an overly dim preview on the back of the camera. Learning your gear's behavior is almost as important as the general rules of photography. :)
