I was originally gonna showcase first, before starting, finishing and submitting this piece, a display of all my friends as anthros. But I got the urge to show this first, as the latter piece might take me a bit longer. ^_^ My friends are important but I'm gonna take my time on that project. Until then.....here's this! I had a sudden drawing streak last night when I came up with this.
I meant originally to do this a couple of years back after seein Studio Ghibli's "THe Cat Returns". And in my mind, several sketches and arts emerged. But I was unhappy with all of them. By then, my fascination for the movie wore off.
Until last night I thought I'd draw him. I had a few pics of the anime saved in my "My Pictures" folder. I used those for a real quick reference. I sketched what he looked like real quick on a scrap piece of paper. Then afterwards, sketched out the pose, using the apperance of him I had from my own reference sketch. I spent inside all day then doing the lineart for this in Adobe Illustrator and coloring in Adobe Photoshop 7 and.....Ta-Dah!!!!!!!!! I present to you, Baron Humbert Von Gikkingen, owner of The Cat Bureau and the male lead in "The Cat Returns"!
The movie is a very charming one. It's also heartwarming as well. I suggest checking it out! It's one of the best in my DVD collection.

"The Baron", as he's commonly known, first appeared as an imaginary character in the anime, "Whisper of the Heart" (Japanese title is Mimi o Sumaseba; literally, "If You Listen Closely"). He was inspired, in the movie, by a porcelain figurine of an anthropomorphic cat wearing an old-fashioned suit and hat and carrying a cane.
He next appears in "The Cat Returns" (Japanese title Neko no Ongaeshi; literally, "The cat's Repayment), which was originally going to be a 20 minute short for a Japanese theme park (working title: Baron: Neko no Danshaku, literally "Baron: The cat Returns"). When the theme park cancelled the project, it went on to be changed into a 45-minute planned short, and from there to a feature-length film. (In the process, Shizuki, the girl who writes Baron into existence in the original, was dropped in favor of her character, Haru (literally, "Spring").
Baron Humbert von Gikkingen is, in this picture, a porcelain figurine with a soul, which can come to life at sunset. He runs the Cat Bureau, and helps those in need.
