No matter what I try, I just can't seem to get any art of this guy that I actually *like* to happen...

Hartley is another one of those characters I designed, but never really did much with, probably because he's a bit on the generic side in terms of design and personality. The couple old pics I have of him from 2016/2017 make him out to basically be "Tough Guy #3" from a fight scene in a movie, and he's definitely from the city, rather than the country, like most of my other deer characters.
His characterization is still pretty minimal even now, as he seems to be an angry young man with some issues to work out, much like Nico Reynard (and I imagine the two have probably fought on at least a handful of occasions) and something of a loner and even a character I might use as a minor antagonist at times when a story might call for an angry loner to come into conflict with other characters, and I do sorta want to lean into his "generic tough guy" appearance a bit and have his biggest achievement in life thus far actually be that he was, in fact, cast as "Tough Guy #3" for an episode of some generic TV show.
I am also leaning toward him hooking up with another underutilized deer character of mine, the country girl Chloe Donner, but I have yet to decide how to have the two meet. Something fairly generic like a chance run-in at the grocery store or while Chloe is visiting friends or family in the city might work, as would having the two meet at a bar or something.
However, the more I think about it, the more I think it could be interesting to have the two meet over a broken-down vehicle--Hartley's street smarts probably include a bit of mechanical skill, as does Chloe's country girl upbringing, and I figure they both drive beat-up old beater cars, so one coming across the other with their hood popped on the side of the road just outside of town seems quite plausible. Perhaps through their combined skills they could get the shitbox up and running again, or at the very least one could help the other by going to get whatever item, be it part or automotive fluid, will solve the problem.
Were it Chloe helping Hartley, he might be taken by surprise by her willingness to help him out and general kindness as he is used to having to do everything on his own, while if it's Hartley that stopped to help Chloe, she might be distrustful of him at first only to quickly realize that behind the hardened loner is someone that could use a friend, someone willing to spend his last few dollars to help her out because he knows all too well how much it sucks to be abandoned and let down--and of course, Chloe's sense of adventure would definitely draw her to the rough-and-tumble city boy. Either way, it would definitely be an "opposites attract" sort of dynamic, and I can see it working quite well.
