Some Bashful Boys in Boxers art, featuring Ash Raleigh.
I figured some art of my (so far) only trans character might be a good way to round out Pride Month.
I haven't forgotten about Ash, and I really love him, and I've been giving a lot of thought to him behind the scenes lately... just haven't really gotten around to drawing him much. In the time since I drew him last I decided his glasses are prescription (rather than sunglasses, as I suggested in the description of a previous portrait of him), so he'll be wearing them most of the time going forward.
He also has a surname now, which is something he's been lacking since his inception--despite his coloration and appearance, he's not a Donner, and is not related to Buck Donner or Chloe Donner and her family. A couple weeks after drawing this, while it was still sitting in the queue waiting to post, I decided his surname would be Raleigh.
Of course, as mentioned last year when Ash made his debut, he's had top surgery but is still a bit shy about his scars etc. so any underwear art of him will probably feature a tank-top or t-shirt. I might have to design his swimwear/beach outfit at some point, too, with this particular challenge in mind. My whole "include the trans pride flag colors in Ash's outfits" aesthetic theme might actually lead to some pretty cute designs for his board shorts and/or tank top since the blue and pink lend themselves well to vaporwave and late-20th century aesthetics, in my opinion. It definitely made for some cute boxers that look like he ordered some Rocko's Modern Life fashion off Wish or Temu.
(While in-universe it might be disrespectful for another character to point this out, I don't *think* it's disrespectful for me as an artist/author/creator/whatever to share information about a character, including things they might want to keep secret from others in-universe or not really be comfortable sharing, from an out of universe perspective?)

Ramble time: a lot of my character development is reverse-engineered from ideas I have for the character, and a lot of my worldbuilding is reverse-engineered from the development of characters, and it's surprising to me just *how much* one character's development can impact my worldbuilding.
In Ash's case, there's a lot of little details I had to figure out how to string together: he's living in Hartford, but seems to frequently visit (or at least pass through) Possum County enough to visit the gas station/convenience store that Herschel works at, and Herschel seems to vaguely recognize Ash enough for Ash to be able to just never outright state that he and Herschel went to school together before he transitioned, leading to amusing attempts by Herschel to figure out where he remembers Ash from.
The interactions between Herschel and Ash highlight how much of a doofus Herschel is, with Ash just chuckling and saying "no, that wasn't me" any time Herschel asks "were you in Mr. Greyson's algebra class?" or "were you in band?" or some other attempt to place where he remembers Ash from. The conclusion I imagine for this little game of theirs would be for Herschel to finally ask Ash, "wait, do you have a sister?", and by this point Ash is probably on good enough terms with Herschel to finally just confide that no, that was him and he's trans.
So this, along with some other minor details and random ideas, give me an excuse to flesh out Ash's character a bit more, as well as dump some other worldbuilding lore here: Possum County (which isn't *actually* a county, but a township at best) is one of a handful of small towns outside of Hartford, with the next somewhat significant town being Farmington, whose school district includes all the little towns like Possum County. As a result, it's very likely that Ash hails from Farmington or another unnamed little one-stoplight (or more likely, one four-way-stop red flasher) town in the area, while Herschel grew up in Possum County, explaining why they would only know each other from school.
This would further explain why Ash, despite living in Hartford, seems to travel through Possum County once a week or so, as he's heading back to Farmington to visit family. Ash's family dynamic might be a bit awkward, but I believe they are fairly supportive and accepting of him. Ash probably left Farmington shortly after graduating high school to go to college in another one of the as-yet-unnamed cities in the area, and also officially transitioned during his time away. After college (I have yet to decide what major and/or what level of degree, if any, he got, as it's possible he simply dropped out for some reason too), he moved to Hartford, which would put him in the vicinity of other characters like Buck Donner, Mick, Reed Rhoades, and the Reynard twins, while his passing through Possum County brings him into occasional contact with Jack Hawthorne and Bubba Haywood.
Character Relationship Lore Lighting Round: The description for a cartoon animal in underwear has already become a novel, so here's some rapid-fire character interaction lore surrounding Ash's interaction with more prominent characters of mine, that won't go too much into detail. Much like how character building often furthers worldbuilding, I find that sometimes one character serves as a sort of anchor point for the development of other characters at times through their relationships to each other.
-Buck is actually Ash's first real friend in Hartford, his confident and outgoing nature leading him to strike up a conversation with Ash upon seeing him alone around town. It's entirely coincidence that they are both part of the LGBT community but it's something else they have in common, Buck mostly struck up conversation because he doesn't see many other deer folk around.
At one point, Buck and Ash engage in some playful headbutting because that's what bucks do, with Buck being a benevolent idiot and not realizing his size advantage poses a problem, and Ash is left dizzy and telling Buck that "yeah yeah, you win" when Buck's playfulness turns to concern for Ash's safety. In a subsequent headbutting incident, Ash wins, knocking Buck onto his butt, which Ash attributes to "element of surprise" before helping Buck back to his feet.
Ash's friendship with Buck might be a good way to explore some of Buck's dark secrets and trauma, namely that he's estranged from his remaining family (although likely not due to Buck being gay), in contrast to Ash's family having a good relationship with him.
-Ash is initially very wary of Bubba Haywood owing to him being a fat middle-aged redneck dog whose favorite hat features a leaping deer in crosshairs, but warms up to him gradually, and eventually grows to view him as a friend. They don't run into each other too often, mostly when Ash stops at the convenience store, so their interaction is limited, but seeing how Bubba and Herschel are friendly with each other probably puts his mind at ease a bit.
He probably also, at some point, picks up on how Bubba is sometimes flirting with Herschel and Herschel is entirely oblivious to it.
-Ash is similarly wary of Jack Hawthorne at first, but warms up to him over time as well. Running into Jack when Ash is hanging out with Buck or Nico and seeing that he is friends with them, and seeing how Jack is also friendly with Herschel probably helps things along a bit. I like the idea of there being some slight friendly awkwardness between Jack and Ash, with Jack strongly suspecting Ash is trans but not wanting to ask about it ("not that it changes anything, but, you know, it's... a thing"), while Ash seriously suspects that Jack and Hendrick are far more than friends.
(Overall, I would describe most characters' reaction to finding out Ash is trans to be a sort of friendly and accepting indifference, as Jack would not so eloquently put it, "not that it matters, but, you know...", with the new information not really changing how anyone views Ash as a friend/acquaintance/bro.)
-Dominic "Skunk Boy" Mephitto remembers Ash's order when he comes into the Burger Clown restaurant, and Ash finds Dominic's snarky and slightly salty demeanor at work quite humorous. Meeting him outside work also reveals that he is part of Buck's friend group, and Ash and Skunk Boy become casual friends as time goes on.
-Ash's interactions with Herschel are more playful than anything, with Ash finding Herschel's dopey, dorky nature endearing and having *way too much fun* with Herschel pushing both of his brain cells to their limit trying to figure out where he knows Ash from. Even if Ash doesn't need anything in particular, he makes a point of stopping at the convenience store just to chat with Herschel a bit whenever he's passing through.
-Ash sorta knew Farley Reynard in high school, so upon meeting Nico Reynard, casually asks if the two are related (Nico and Farley are cousins, with Peter Reynard being Nico and Dominika's uncle, but they are both estranged from that part of the family and feel strong resentment toward Peter), which leads to an argument between Nico and Ash. However, the target of Nico's anger quickly shifts from Ash, to a bystander that misgenders Ash, when the bystander tells Nico to "stop yelling at her", to which Nico immediately starts shouting about how Ash is a guy and to mind their own business. This quickly cements Nico as Ash's surrogate asshole big brother and ally, and subsequent interactions between the two are a bit tense but don't turn into shouting matches between the two.
Whether Nico actually knows that Ash is trans or if it just comes down to Nico being an idiot that likes to argue and fight and had an opportunity present itself in that moment will forever be unclear, but Nico's arrogant smirk afterwards, and whenever the incident comes up in conversation later, probably means Nico knew what he was doing. The friendship between Ash and Buck, and Ash and Nico, probably further aids in mending Buck and Nico's relationship as time goes on.
-Ash and Dominika also get along fairly well, but Dominika is a friendly idiot and generally gets along with everyone, and Ash is intrigued and amused by the differences in Nico and Dominika's personalities.
After seeing Nico's reaction to being asked about Farley, Ash cautiously brings it up to Dominika, where her normally cheerful demeanor quickly fades and she just says "yeah we don't like to talk about that...", but this does open up the opportunity for the topic to be explored a bit more (although this topic is far more likely to be discussed in detail between Nico Reynard and Dominic Mephitto than between Ash and either of the twins).
