Lore Vomit Time.
Tex seems way more comfortable in here were-coyote form this time around. There's been a progression in both the design of this form and her feelings towards it since I first revealed it, initially she was an angry beast more in line with traditional werewolf lore, but gradually became more comfortable and more in control, at least through the progression of the art over the years, and in later art of her in her were-coyote form she's far more comfortable with it and having far more fun.
It's hard to imagine Tex having any sort of insecurities or things that actually make her nervous, owing to her confident and adventurous and carefree nature, but ever since I introduced her were-form I wanted that to be something she had mixed feelings about. On the one hand, she's not exactly ashamed of her heritage, and being able to transform is a really cool ability, especially when the beast form has some distinct advantages over her normal demihuman form.
On the other hand, she wasn't exactly able to control when she would transform, and didn't exactly have as much control over herself when she was transformed, either. This would lead to both wacky hijinks and wild nights out, and some actually scary moments when her heightened and unregulated emotions would lead to fits of feral rage, or in the best-case scenario, a deep depressed state where she'd just run away to sleep it off.
I initially mentioned that her transformations appeared tied to the cycles of the moon, like traditional werewolf lore, and I made lame boomer humor "women bad" jokes about it being "that time of the month", but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I actually sorta like the idea of it syncing up with her cycle as the changes in hormones would probably play into her ability to transform quite a bit.
The other important bit of this is Dominic "Skunk Boy" Mephitto. Having transformation abilities himself, but initially keeping them secret from Tex out of fear she wouldn't take it too well, the first time she transforms in front of him would be equal parts surprising and relieving to him, and equal parts terrifying, embarrassing, and relieving to her. While I've yet to decide the exact circumstances, earlier in their relationship, Tex would just have to "go out of town" or "visit family" or some other convenient excuse during the few days each month when she was most likely to transform, and that may have had some implications for their relationship as well. As I vomit this out, seems like it could actually become the catalyst for the revelation. Either way, outside of anger, she'd be filled with fear and embarrassment and worry that she might hurt her dopey half-skunk manchild of a boyfriend, but his shock and surprise would quickly give way not to fear, terror, and/or disgust, but to understanding and a sense of relief and mild amusement. From there, he'd be comfortable revealing his own transformed state.
This is actually one of the most important aspects of their relationship that I've just never really had a good opportunity to discuss--the trust they'd have to place in each other to discuss the whole "yeah we're actually monsters" thing, and then, Dominic Mephitto teaching her how to control her were-coyote form and transformation into it, sharing his own experiences and everything he's learned about it over the years. With time and effort, Tex would reach a point where her control over her were-coyote form is just as good as Skunk Boy's control over his Great Horned Skunkdog form, and I sorta like the idea that they might even both go out into the woods or something and just "feral out" sometimes just to blow off steam.
Of course, transformation has a lot of implications in-universe that I've had to think about over the years as well. First and foremost being, why don't characters that have beast forms like this stay in their clearly superior beast forms vs their humanoid forms? For example, Dominic Wolff, after a certain point, rarely bothers to transform back out of his Hellhound form (it's dubious whether it actually meets the definition of "hellhound" generally, but it's a term I applied to it forever ago and I don't know how else to describe it) back to his humanoid form and seems unaffected by this in any way.
For that one, I think the most practical answer is quite simple, the beast forms consume a lot more energy, tiring them out quicker and requiring a lot more food and sleep to sustain over long periods. The initial transformation takes a lot of energy and effort, and then remaining in that form long-term would just be more tiring than returning to the humanoid form. These forms often also have additional supernatural/magical abilities and attributes that require additional energy and additional effort to control.
Also, someone who has gone the majority of their life as a humanoid probably has a bit of difficulty adjusting to suddenly having a lot more fur, and in some cases, getting larger and/or growing horns and claws and longer fangs and a variety of other rapid physical changes. In the case of Badger Roland (a mutant winged badger), for example, he goes from a 5-foot-2 stocky winged badger to a nearly 8-foot-tall hulking winged beast, a badger/wolverine monster, which represents and exponential increase in size--and this monster form also has very long, very sharp claws. Not to mention Roland's already hot-tempered disposition is cranked up to 11 by the various physical, mental, and hormonal changes that come with this transformation, which is fine because such a form has little actual utility outside of combat anyways.
In an interesting twist, this is one situation where Nick Domnall's comparatively pathetic critter transformation actually offers him a distinct advantage--he turns into a much smaller creature, meaning he uses less energy in his raccoon form. He can eat less, which enables him to save money on food, and being a raccoon means he can find all sorts of good places to nap, and while possibly a bit degrading, he can ride around on another character's back or in a backpack or something if he's feeling especially lazy. Additionally, if he's willing to degrade himself to this level, he can wander up to people with food he wants and pretend to be a cute and cuddly raccoon to convince them to feed him, or simply just steal the food and run off with it!
There's also the (relatively minor) legal implications that might come into play in terms of getting an ID that reflects that you might get carded in your humanoid form or some sort of wildly different beast form, although I suppose in that case there could either be some sort of dual identification in the form of more info on the ID card or simply having two cards made, or some sort of special note or code on an otherwise standard ID that indicates "yeah no the pudgy dopey demihuman coyote girl with freckles in the picture can turn into the pudgy full coyote you just pulled over for going 80 in a 55".
One other thing that's legitimately felt like a plot hole to me for *years* is that I've expressed that Dominic Mephitto feels so out of place as a demihuman that he wears a costume nose and ears just so he can fit in with humans slightly better, them thinking he's *just* a cringe furry cosplayer somehow "better" than him being a demihuman, yet he exists in a world where anthropomorphs also exist very commonly and he has a fairly normal-looking Skunkdog form that should fit right in. Outside of the practical implications of his fat ass already eating too much, and his horns catching on doorframes when he tries to walk around inside, and not being able to fit into any car that isn't a convertible, is the simple fact that he, or any other demihuman for that matter, should not have to change or hide who they are just to be accepted. I'm thinking at some point I would need another character to just bluntly tell him this.
Also, as much as Tex loves his Skunkdog form (I have considered that transformation might actually be something of a turn-on/fetish for her, not to mention how well Skunkdog would work for all her petplay fantasies), she didn't fall in love with a skunkdog, she fell in love with a skunk boy, and I think there could be a legitimately tender and slightly comedic moment where she caresses his fuzzy cheek and scritches behind his ear a bit before telling him "okay, turn back into the dork I fell in love with" or something to that effect. Although, perhaps in that case, she might just be tired of him shedding even more than his floofy tail is already prone to, or she's realized that his skunk farts are far more potent when he's a full skunk and she's already out of air fresheners!
I didn't even ramble about how well their respective transformations could play into petplay time, how much more Tex could get into character as a dog if she turned into one, or how much fun she could have as a handler with Skunkdog, but this has already gone on too long and I am trying to maintain some level of tactfulness with this ramble!
