Yo! Biology degree here. No, he won't be making tissue slices for transmission microscopy, at least not without a microtome and probably embedding the sample in a wax block to support it while slicing it paper-thin. They'll be using something called a "dissecting microscope" to look at more-or-less intact things. It has more adjustment to do when you're using it than a conventional transmission microscope, but since it's not cheating the limits of physics, this adjustment is not painstaking, nor in danger of irreparably damaging your thousand-dollar lens. :)
It's actually one of those genetic-lottery things; at one point, a young male in the enclave - we'll call him Liklett - was born with a fully-formed second tongue. This actually would've carried serious health risks, and fortunately the expert medical personnel at House Ivenmoth were ready and able to assist in its safe removal! The fact that it helped advance a research project of senior Ivenmoth staff is pure good fortune and definitely not at all weird.
Find an dead yinglet on the street or rather have the guards bring it if none was interested in recover for couple of hours.
Cut it apart and see how it works.
Very useful then you start treating yinglets as you know how they differ from humans, who implies you know why humans works somehow.
Same is done for humans but today they don't use random bodies anymore outside of war zones.
150 years ago no corpses was safe as they needed to teach new doctors.

From the preservation - I doubt the chemistry is up to formaldehyde, so probably ethanol - some time ago. Could be months or years.
How? Due to the high number of exiles living in the city and their high mortality rate, unclaimed bodies come along quite frequently.
Where? In the cupboard.
And why? For SCIENCE!

If it was proper science, there would be a label on the jar itself. Having only a label on the lid is begging for trouble and poor practice. Labeling clearly is the base if you don't want a older you or a future scholar surrounded by old jar but not sure of what is is, when it was harvested or if it is a healthy organ or it has a illness. Ran is creating a recipe for disaster.
I believe val has already supplied this.

Creepy it may be, but this is no different from standard medical training. Some doctors might feel uncomfortable on seeing their first portion of corpse upon the slab, but you don't get to do surgery on living people until you've mastered your procedure on the cadaver. That's why body donations are always in such demand.
"I-Is that a tongue in a jar!?"
"Yes! I have all sorts of body parts in jars! Its part of being a scientist!"
"Okay, but... where did you get them!?"
"From Yinglets... oh I see the problem here, don't worry, the original owners ARE dead!"
"WHERE THEY DEAD BEFORE OR AFTER YOU TOOK OUT THEIR TONGUE!?"
"Oh! Dead, obviously... they'd probably bite me if they where still alive when I pulled it out."

How strange. Today I saw these Zorro comics which made me think of the movie and the specific scene in which this captain has Zorro’s brother’s head in a jar and his friend’s hand in another. And Zorro is like, “You are a very sick man,” and the captain is so nonchalant about it.
For a moment I thought that was some parasite that triggered an instinctual worried reaction from Kass. Then I thought it was one them yinglet peens. Then I finally realized it was a yinglet tongue. Does Kass really have to ask where he got that tongue, though? Haven’t we reached that point where we don’t question Ran and just accept. Just accept.

Yo, fellow OOPs followers! I'm here to remind you once again that there's a place called "Top Web Comics" https://www.topwebcomics.com/?home=3 that compiles comics from various places. There's a bunch of cool stuff there. They have monthly votes, so you can support OOPs there. You can vote once a day per device, so your PC, laptop, tablet, phone, etc.
I've noticed that you can sometimes even get in extra votes from different IP addresses, or if you're disconnected from your IP and open up again later.
It closed out last month at 1267 votes and 38th place. It's currently at 893 votes and 55th place. The highest it's reached is 36th place, and the top vote getters seem to end up with something close to 20,000 votes.
Vote early, vote often! Help OOPs get noticed!

Always a little jarring to unexpectedly be presented a preserved specimen!! especially since that's probably. a much less common practice in this world.
that said I looove ran going off about effective education at the end!!! love to see someone so interested in the practicality of how to spread knowledge
