A ninja of the Hidden Leaf Village seeks POWER! But he's a nobody...but when he hears a rumour of a powerful monster he thinks he might have found a way to finally get that power he craves!
He gets it!...just not in the way, or form, he expected.
Set prior to the events of Naruto.
Ninja -> Kurama's Tail
********************************************
In the Hidden Leaf Village there were ninja clans with names so legendary that merely to be associated with them, let alone part of them, could change the entire course of your life. There were ninja clans so exceptional that being born in their family forced the weight of the world upon you as you were expected to live up to your grandiose heritage. There were families of ninja that spanned generations of mighty ninja who had changed and reshaped the course of history on their own. Clans like the Hyuga clan where even the weakest member was expected to bring forth great change or be a rook in the chess game of politics that went on across the globe.
And then there were families like the Yowaitobi family where your birth, life, and death were almost guaranteed to be nothing more than a few lines of text in a few old records nobody would purposefully read, at best. Families that were the footsoldiers and throwaway sacrifices and low grade genin, even if members of the family became chunin they were still treated this way unless they could truly show their value and worth. And with powerful figures like Namikaze Minato around who was already on the verge of becoming the Fourth Hokage at such a young age it was a time when being great was no longer enough.
To become more than just a faceless ninja working worthless jobs one had to be exceptional!
Unfortunately for Yowaitobi Seikai he was only great.
He could clone himself multiple times very well. His aim with a kunai was just as deadly as his skills in hand to hand combat which was to say very deadly. He had a selection of useful techniques too, mostly specializing around fire style with a preference for creating smokescreens and flame traps, that set him at least a few pegs above other ninja of equal rank.
And yet here he was; so unrecognizable, so much of a nothing that when he slipped away from the Hidden Leaf Village nobody noticed.
Not because he was a ninja and that was how he was supposed to leave locations but because nobody even realized he was gone. And just where had he gone?
On a personal quest! A quest to finally gain enough power that despite being a nobody people would be forced to recognize him! Be forced to see his greatness! To see him as more than just a genin! To see him as Yowaitobi Sekai! And he knew just how to do it…probably.
He had heard rumours from some travelers a few missions ago who had been talking about some monster deep in the woods, a monster with great power. Slaying it, capturing it, or even allying with it would assure Sekai of power so he wasted no time in preparing. He studied maps, memorizing the paths and locations necessary. He stored extra ninja tools and food for the trip. He waited until there was a good opportunity and then he slipped out without a word, leaping through the trees fast as lightning, following the paths, searching the locations, and eventually finding evidence of the beast whereupon he tracked it to a massive cave.
He leapt down from the trees, kneeling in front of the cave. He didn’t need to enter the cave to know the monster was within it; he could feel its overwhelming chakra from outside and the beast’s terrible aura weighed down upon him.
“Great beast, I come before you seeking your power,” Sekai called out, keeping his head down, worries running through his mind. He was a powerful and skilled ninja of course but was he strong enough to survive this beast should it choose to attack him? Could he even escape before being slain? He did not know but he could not falter now! He had to press on, to try and gain this power so he could be more than nobody! He heard a rustling in the cave, fur moving across fur, but nothing more. It stilled. Had the beast heard him? He tried again. “Come out, great beast, so that we may find a mutual benefit to this arrangement!”
“Go away, human,” a rumbling voice came from the cave, filled with so much hatred and power that it nearly send Sekai running for the hills but he steeled himself; if he could overcome this monster and gain its trust and power then he could do anything!
“I cannot leave without your power, great beast! Please, I mus-” but before Sekai could finish there was a rushing sound and in an instant it seemed the air before him filled with fangs and fur.
“I said leave!” the voice demanded furiously and this time Sekai did stumble back, falling on his rump most unceremoniously, although it did let him get a good look at the monster. His heart pounded in his chest with fear, his body shook as it begged for him to flee, the beast was terrible and monstrous indeed!
But its power!
That was even more monstrous and great and Sekai knew he needed power like this!
“Please, great…fox, please, I must have your power else I shall return to being a nobody,” Sekai said as he beheld the monster. It was tall, bigger than a building, and built lanky with long limbs that looked nonetheless strong and fast enough to carry the beast across the land in the blink of an eye. The monster’s horrifying face looked like that of a fox, but horrific. Permanently etched into a snarling visage it seemed baring a full display of teeth sharper and deadlier than any blade with red eyes that seemed to bore into Sekai’s very soul surrounded by dark fur extending all the way up to the fox’s tall, rabbit-like ears. Even if Sekai fled he knew the fox could track him by sound alone with ears like that, let alone any of the monster’s other ways.
The only way out was by making a bargain with this monster! Though as his gaze fell to the rear of the monster he finally realized just what sort of abomination he was talking with. Nine long, fluffy tails slowly swayed behind the monster, each as lithe and flexible as a vine but Sekai had no doubt that each contained enough physical power and potent chakra that they could individually destroy a mountain let alone a little nobody of a genin like him, and that was exactly what this sort of beast was.
One of the tailed beasts of legend, spoke only in hushed tones away from the ears of the village, almost like a bedtime story to scare kids to bed except it was no fairy tale. The monster was real, it was easy to find remnants of its work. Villages destroyed and stories of those who managed to channel the monster’s power for themselves abounded throughout the land. This was either Sekai’s luckiest day…
Or his last.
“Your power is legendary, if we work together we can build our legend!” Sekai said desperately, and instead of seeing a positive reaction he saw the horrifying monster quirk an eyebrow, bemused, like Sekai’s words were just a joke to it!. A large, clawed hand was lifted from the earth, reaching towards Sekai. He didn’t dare run, he couldn’t escape if he tried. He closed his eyes, this was it.
“My legend is already massive and bloodied and full enough of you horrible humans,” the monster growled as its hand wrapped around Sekai, but it didn’t squeeze. It merely held him. “However…” Sekai’s eyes flew open, letting out the breath he had not realized he was holding. However? He liked the sound of that! “You have great chakra within you, you seem like you have far, far more power than even you know.” He did? Sekai could not resist smiling; he liked hearing that, and the fox’s tone was becoming slightly more interested than hostile now! Things were turning around! “I can see a world where we work together. You just have to obey my wishes and the power you crave will be given!”
“Yes! Yes! Give me the power!” Sekai cried out desperately, unable to hide his need anymore. He’d do anything for htis power! To unleash his potential! To show those stuck up jonin at the Hidden Leaf Village that he was someone important! He was released from the fox’s hand and the monster sat up.
“Repeat these hand signs,” the beast said, his hands rapidly flickering between the common hand signs that Sekai, and every ninja worth a damn, knew.
Dog! Boar! Ram!
“Good, good, now…” the fox shook its tails out, letting them all extend to their great, monstrous lengths, curving around the fox monster like a weapon and every tip was pointed directly at Sekai. Red chakra flowed through the fox, centering on his tails as they slowly approached Sekai. “Keep doing those and your power will soon be unleashed!” the monster said, letting the tails stroke Sekai. Sekai had expected them to be wiry and rough, instruments of mass doom but instead they were soft and gentle. The finest blankets in the world could not compare to the quality of the fox’s fur and he relaxed. If the fox was going to do anything bad to him he would have done so by now so Sekai kept repeating the hand signs with ease, proud to show off his competency and believing the fox recognized that in him.
Warmth began to fill him as the tails caressed him, welling up from deep, deep within him. He could feel his chakra stirred, roused to action by the calling of the tailed beast’s chakra, and he could feel it merging with that new power growing within him. It felt wonderful, he felt charged up! He could punch a tree! A castle! A mountain even and break it more than his own fist!
Yet that power was still growing; welling up within him! It felt limitless! He was limitless! His power was so strong he couldn’t completely tame it, letting a bit of his chakra spill out into the signs he was making, mixing with the chakra seals drawn onto his skin by the tails expertly, weaving a spell over his body without even being aware of it.
Some of his chakra slipped from his body, manifesting on the outside by growing hairs all over his body, in patches to start but that would soon change. His dark hair started to turn orange, matching the rich colour of the fox in front of him.
“Yes, yes, don’t stop, you can grow even stronger!” the monster said, the snarl turning into a grin now as he watched his wicked powers work over the clueless ninja.
More power, stronger, that motivated Sekai to keep going even as he realized something felt a little off. Perhaps he should figure out what? No, he had to keep going! Had to become stronger! He already felt like he could go toe to claw with the fox and be on even footing, so how much stronger could he get? He had to know! He couldn’t stop until he knew! The fur over his body kept growing, thicker and lusher than before.
Only one thing could compare to the fur on him and that was the fur on the fox for the simple reason it was the same fur. A claw gently dragged over Sekai’s clothing, ripping it away.
“Your power cannot be contained by these old clothes, let them fall away so you can be remade anew! Stronger than ever!” the fox purred maliciously, receiving an eager nod from the ninja. The fox hated humans, he hated how they treated him, how they used him… but it also made them oh so easy to toy with! The human wanted power?
He would get it!
The ninja’s legs felt funny, but he was kneeling, it was fine, he didn’t need to worry about them, not even as they began to merge together into a single tube-like shape, thinning down until they were as thick as the beast’s own tails were, and that thinness was spreading upwards. His thighs, his waist, even his torso was starting to slim down, only maintaining any semblance of girth thanks to the thick, fluffy fur coating most of his body now. His feet merged together too, smoothing out into a long, tapered tip that flicked around, looking just like the end of the tails that were still surrounding Sekai, distracting him, hiding his own fur amidst their own flickers and flashed of fluff around him.
A need was building in Sekai as his gaze turned upwards, arms finally succumbing to the changes and merging into his body. The hands were the last thing to go, sinking into the fur before finally making one last ‘dog’ sign and being absorbed into the rest of the tailflesh.
I need something…what do I need? More power was not enough; Sekai knew that now! He had so much power, more than he knew what to do with, he needed something more… but what?
“You know what you need,” the fox’s words were like velvet poison slipping into Sekai’s ears, luring him into a trap. He knew it was a trap, the fox had tricked him but…he also did need something, the fox had what he needed. “Take your need!” The fox turned around, revealing his back and rump to Sekai, and that was when Sekai realized what he needed. He wiggled on the ground, flopping a bit awkwardly as his face pushed out into a pointed snout, moving towards the great beast.
Yes, yes, this was what he needed! This was what he needed to be! The wiggling tails around him lured him in like a siren’s call as he buried his face in the fur around them, among them, with them.
His face squished into it, his eyes closing, as the transformation completed and Sekai felt whole.
He now knew what was missing.
He was a tail, and he hadn’t been attached to his beast! Warmth filled him as he moved, though not of his own volition. That’s right, a tail was just a tail, it didn’t move on its own! It was controlled by the beast!
“Well you fit right in, don’t you, number 10?” Kurama chuckled to himself, flexing the tail, moving it, feeling the warm enjoyment it experienced at being a tail. All the other tails were normal, but this one had been a human and it felt different. It felt…oddly happy like this? That was weird, how do you get used to a happy tail?
It mattered not, for more important was the power! Kurama was already powerful, but the tail seemed to amplify his power! Multiplying it, it felt! He was no longer just some tailed beast!
He was a true monster! Perhaps even a god! He could rampage and nobody could stop him! The idea thrilled him, but…
Perhaps he could simply enjoy himself for now, returning to his warm, cozy cave den, curling up, wrapping himself up in his tails, his warm and fluffy and cozy tails. They felt so nice, so comforting and soothing around him.
And the one tail felt happy, and always would as it fulfilled its purpose as the tenth tail of the nine-tailed fox Kurama!
