“DUDE U GOTTA CUM C THIS!” the message pinged on Kit’s computer and, rather than keep her focus on her writing Kit swapped over to the chat window to see her friend, username of ‘Shard’ had messaged her. She replied with the obvious response (See what?) and within moments she received another message. “DUDE JUST GET ONLINE! I FOUND SUMTHING COOL!”
Well, how could you argue with that logic? You simply couldn’t so Kit sent another reply (Be right there, Matey) and picked up their cyber-connector visor and slid it on. With a tap on the button at the side of the device the device whirred alive, there was a flash of blue light, and Kit was gone.
The sensation was like a rush of movement while being totally, completely still. Not even the inner ear could feel anything moving, but from the outside Kit could feel the rush around her. It was black at first, then blue and white lines streaked through the air around her before a blue square opened up far, far, far below her. It very rapidly grew closer, revealing tall, dilapidated buildings and trashed areas around them. Broken parks and fences, overgrown or collapsed trees, garbage, just a wasteland of digital space.
Which, in a sense, was kind of what it was.
The speed slowed down once again and Kit slowly fell to the ground, gently landing on the ground that, despite looking like an uneven cobblestone path was in fact completely flat. It was simply a rough looking texture but the supporting digital framework beneath it had not been changed. Very weird, Kit thought as she moved a foot through a lifted brick while feeling nothing.
“There you are! Took you long enough!” a familiar voice called and when Kit looked a grin split her face as she saw a familiar face. Oversized black hoodie, messy dyed-blue hair that often obscured one or both of his eyes, and a reedy body that looked like it hadn’t gotten exercise or food on purpose in the last year or two? That was for sure her best friend Shard!
“I came right after you messaged me you dork,” Kit laughed, spreading her arms and embracing her friend. While they hadn’t met in real life Kit knew she was a few inches, at least, taller than Shard. Here in the digital world, however, their avatars had been adjusted to be the same size. It was a lingering trait from an earlier edition of this strange digital world. In its first iteration everyone had been the exact same height and build. Now you could easily customize those things and the modern cyber-connector visors automatically adjusted your avatar to look more like you (unless of course you had specified avatar settings to change that!) in every way except for height. While Kit didn’t bother changing her digital appearance she wasn’t entirely sure if Shard looked like his real self or not. Despite being best friends and spending hours together in the digital world they had never actually exchanged real photographs of each other.
It didn’t really matter; ever since Kondai Corp developed this strange digital world the lines between reality and digital reality had blurred, in more ways than one. Some entire corporations were run entirely in this digital world now, and some people like Shard spent more time here than in the real one. Which was fine; as long as your body had digitized properly it didn’t need to be fed or anything until you returned to the real world. It was strange and seemed almost too good to be true, but it was, and that was how life had become.
“Yeah, but I found something super cool!” Shard said with excitement as he reached into his hoodie pocket before pulling out…
“A cell phone? An old flip phone at that? Dude you can just buy those at the shops,” Kit said dismissively, though in reality she was interested. Obviously her friend hadn’t invited her here to show her a common, everyday object. He had to have something interesting planned and as his grin grew Kit realized he absolutely did.
“Well, this isn’t any old phone, it is in fact a Digivice,” her friend said with a disdainful huff in jest. When Kondai Corp had made this strange digital world it had come with many regions beyond what they had initially created, and stemming from those regions had been strange, digital monsters that had come to be called ‘Digimon.’ It didn’t take long before some unscrupulous hackers found ways to use Digimon to cause trouble in the digital world and it didn’t take very long either for Kondai Corp to hire one of those hackers to teach them to tame these monsters and use them for security.
Nobody knows whether these Digivices had been made originally by a hacker or by Kondai Corp or by some other group entirely but they were quite ubiquitous in the digital world. In the more normal areas they weren’t often seen, or even owned. You didn’t really need a Digimon to go shopping and it was seen as bad etiquette to have a Digimon with you in the more ‘safe’ and pedestrian areas of the Digital World.
There were obviously exceptions, locations made to cater to relaxing experiences with your Digimon and friends, but in general as Digimon were seen more often in less safe regions. Even this decaying city area that Kit and Shard found themselves in was one of these area. Wild Digimon, untamed and feral, roamed these areas and would attack on sight and while technically you couldn’t be killed as a digital avatar of yourself it still hurt and there were rumours of strange things happening relating to these Digimon attacks, people suffering effects in the real world or even vanishing. There were more wild rumours too but they were too fanciful to be true. While this region was technically hostile it was rare for those wild Digimon to appear here so Kit never had needed to have her own Digivice. If a Digimon did attack Shard tended to be able to deal with it with ease, which left Kit with a question.
“I know you have a Digivice so what is so special about this one?” Kit asked and her friend’s grin grew more excited though there was a mischievous edge to that smile now.
“This Digivice is for you,” Shard said.
“For me? I mean…thanks? I’m not sure if I’m ready to tame Digimon though, thank you but I don’t think I want that yet,” Kit said, shaking her head. Getting a Digivice wasn’t entirely easy if you weren’t a hacker. A hacker could simply find the source code, attach it to an object, and proceed from there, and all a regular person, like Kit, had to do was find a hacker who would be willing to make a Digivice for them. Cheap ones barely even cost $10 these days, but to get a usable Digivice you needed Digimon Data and that was more expensive to get. The easiest way to get Digimon Data was by applying a scan function to your Digivice and when you defeated a wild Digimon as it faded away into data the scanner would collect some and eventually have enough to create a copy of that Digimon under your control.
Some Digimon created this way even attained a form of artificial (so they said) intelligence, becoming just as smart as humans and acting like it, while others were simply programs to be controlled for battle. Even the sentient ones seemed to enjoy battle and combat so it seemed to be something ingrained into the root data for a Digimon but Kit really didn’t know much about the coding of a Digimon.
“Oh, no, not for you to use. This is a Digivice for you, to control you!” Shard said excitedly.
“What!? Wh-What the Hell are you talking about?!” Kit cried out in shock to her friend’s great amusement.
“I know what you write and like, you’ve shared it with me. You might not be that interested in having your own Digimon to fight with…but you like the idea of being transformed into one,” Shard said gleefully and Kit blushed; that was admittedly very, very true but- and before she could even attempt to protest Shard continued. “So I worked real hard on this and I think it should work! We are digital avatars here, our bodies are made out of, mostly, the same stuff as Digimon, so with a few tweaks I should be able to transform you into one! It’d just be for a while, but I bet you’d like that. I can even call you by your species name.”
“Sh-Shard…” Kit mumbled, covering her face with her long, dark hair and her hands but she wasn’t saying no. How could she even think to say no! The idea was exciting, thrilling her! She needed this! It was just hard to admit that aloud and her friend knew that.
“If you really want this Kit you just have to give me full permission to activate the Digivice. All you have to say is pineapple,” Shard explained, wiggling the sleek flip phone at her teasingly.
“Pineapple,” no hesitation she said it, there was a beep on the phone as the screen lit up, and all Shard did was press a button. Immediately Kit could feel it, pins and needles all over her body. It was like her entire body had gone half to sleep, not entirely, but looking at her limbs she could see her human textures leaving her body, reducing her down to a simple blue framework body. Just like any avatar that lacked a skin texture, but it was not going to look this way for long! Her hands were where it started and she gasped in excitement as her fingers seemed to explode out into three large, thick, dark claws, texture returned to them along with their new shape.
She wiggled them, the pins and needles feeling fading from the fingers.
“It’s working!” she cried out in excitement, watching her hand reshape itself into a wider shape with a cute black pawpad on the palm of it. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what Digimon she was becoming; she was becoming her favourite of course! Gazimon! So cute, so adorable! The idea filled her with childish delight!
She rubbed her hands together, she could feel the stiffness of the claws, their sharp points for raking and tearing into foes, and more excitingly the fur! Her fur was soft and luxurious, thick too! Temperature wasn’t a concern in the digital world but if it was she knew she would have been very warm and cozy even in a blizzard! And it was such a cute shade of purple too! So adorable!
Shard pulled out his regular Digivice which looked much more like a more modern smartphone and began typing in on it as the change continued for Kit. Her body was shrinking though her arms were remaining longer, by the time she was fully shrunk her claws could easily drag on the ground if she wanted. Cool!
But more cool were the continuing changes. Her body was rounding out a bit, taking on a more plush toy shape than a human shape with a paler shade of lavender fur covering her belly. Her legs were adapting their stance into a more bestial, digitigrade stance. Her toes were growing big and thick, massive claws jutting from the three toes. It was awesome! She wiggled them, scraping her claws across the ground. Sure, it didn’t leave a mark in the textures but it felt like it should have! She felt so strong, so energized! Her transformation wasn’t even complete yet and she wanted to run! To leap and jump!
She knew why Digimon wanted to fight now! She had so much energy and the idea of a fight was already seeming super appealing! She bounced on her toes, too excited and energized now to stay still! Every down-bounce pushed out her new tail longer and longer.
She gasped when she saw it, grabbing it, clutching it! Purple fur covered most of its length though the tip was still blue polygons. Another bounce and the polygons lengthened as the purple fur texture spread up further. Finally leather bands wrapped around the tail and a tuft of purple jutted from the end and it was complete!
“Oh my gods I love it! Look! Look! I have a tail!” she cried out excitedly, leaping around her friend and pointing it out.
“Damn, didn’t know you’d be this excited to become a little monster,” Shard laughed to himself as he typed in a few last things and clicked ‘send.’
Suddenly on the standing part of the broken brick wall near the park there was a mirror. Kit ran over to it on all fours. Oh! That felt so natural, her body just knew how to move on all fours and it was so fast! She’d have to experiment, but standing on her hind legs felt fine but all fours felt so right for running. She watched as the final part of the change commenced.
Polygons moved around on her face, she could feel it and see it. The snout! She grabbed her snout; it was weird grabbing the smooth, textureless snout but she could feel it! It was hers! And the ears! She tugged them, no pain or much sensation but they were hers! Like long, wide wings growing atop her head!
Then, finally, the textures loaded.
Purple fur!
A little black nose!
Wide eyes, red irises, and a black scar across both!
She grinned, baring her sharp teeth. She laughed, she giggled, she bounced and bounded, too full of excitement and wonder to even string together a comprehensible sentence!
“Looks like you’re enjoying this a lot,” Shard was quite amazed, alternating between watching the goofball Gazimon and typing into his phone. The flip phone disintegrated into data, all its data moved over to his smart phone. He hadn’t wanted to risk damaging his smart phone with the program he had used to transform Kit but now that it had worked he saw no reason not to do so. It was so much easier to work on a modern smart phone, after all.
He frowned a little as he opened Kit’s data.
Strange, her values look just like a Digimon’s, he noted to himself. Was it strange? Probably not, he had transformed her into a Gazimon after all but all the data was the same. She took up the same amount of memory as his other Rookie-level Digimon, her files and folders looked the same, and it was hard to tell the difference between the Digimon he had created and his friend.
Well, might as well look into her files deeper, maybe she has some significant differences? I won’t save anything, he thought as he opened a few files. Some were text files, easy to read. The ‘ATTACK.inf’ file was very readable in his other Digimon as it simply listed the attacks they had available, along with details about how that attack functioned. The actual data for how the attacks worked was stored elsewhere in some hex format and was a lot harder to parse, though he was getting better at it.
“Hey, Kit, want to try something…extra?” the thought occurred to him and he had to take the chance.
“Hmm? What is it?” the Gazimon said, swinging on one of the swings at the park nonchalantly.
“This is just your digital representation of you, so whatever we do is going to be fine, right?” Shard called out and Kit stopped swinging as a look of hesitation crossed her face.
“Yes..?” she replied uncertainly, hopping off the swing and heading towards Shard, nervous but intrigued by what her friend had in mind.
“I have a bunch of these,” he pulled little memory cards from seemingly nowhere, “They allow me to modify my Digimon, make them stronger, teach them new moves, and a few even change their appearance a bit, like this one!” he held up a blue card, “gives my Digimon webbed hands and feet so they can swim better. Want to try them out? None of my Digimon are more than combat programs, so I don’t really know how they feel, but could be fun!”
“Well…if you think it is safe,” Kit looked at her big claws, imagining webbing spreading between them since she didn’t really have fingers aside from the claws. “Sure! Let’s try it!” Kit bounced on her toes, excited once more. Shard chuckled, it was cute just how excited his friend was over this.
Of course first they tried the webbing. Pale purple skin stretched between Kit’s claws on both her hands and feet, digits spreading wider than normal to maximize swimming power.
“It kind of just happened, I didn’t really feel anything,” Kit commented, “Let’s try another one!” And from there they were off! Bigger claws, overall increased size, shrunken down, they even changed her fur from blue to red with an illegitimate card Shard had nabbed from some hacker friends.
Each time they modified Kit they had a laugh, a chuckle, a good time, and the memory values in Kit’s data banks changed, though since Kit wasn’t exactly a Digimon they didn’t change the same as a Digimon’s and with any coding if something unexpected happened…
BING!
“Oh, I’ve got a notification,” Shard said as he removed the purple card that made Kit drool corrosive, toxic, purple slime from her maw which apparently tasted like sour apple candy. He checked it and saw an alert on his phone as Kit wiped the last of the slime from her mouth.
“Error: memory value not found? What?” Shard clicked the error, being taken to Kit’s memory files where he frowned in confusion.
“Hey uh…Shard?” Kit said, a little hesitantly, “Did you put another card in?”
“No, just wait a moment,” the memory values were normally all numbers, but there was an E6 in one of the columns, and a F9 and a G3 and…well, quite a few, all of which were blinking red, and more were popping up. What was going on?
BING!
Error: memory data corrupted.
“Huh?” that was new, that had never happened. But it was fine, right?
“Aaah, I feel…weird, thinking is…hard?” Kit said, rubbing her head and Shard looked up and gasped in shock. Kit was melting! Her body looked somewhat goopy, oozy, starting to drip in nasty, sludgy dollops to the ground. The scent of static on a CRT TV screen filled the area around them along with something more pungent but Kit didn’t seem to notice despite her new snout, though that too was oozing, drooping, sliding to the side of her snout.
“Kit just…what’s happening? How do you feel?” Shard asked.
“I…don’t know…Weird, something is…weird?” Kit said, falling onto all fours, her belly starting to swell as it melted, expanding. Rib bones poked through it as her legs were subsumed into the sloppy mess that her body was becoming. Her tail splattered to the ground, oozing its way back to the Gazimon’s growing, messy form.
Though, perhaps not a Gazimon for long. Even her ears had fallen off, the dark marks around her eyes reforming into metal plates that looked bolted onto her face.
“Aaah…strange…” she sighed, a wisp of rotten data billowing from her maw, filling the air with more of that static stench as her neat, small, sharp teeth began growing bigger and thicker as well as more out of place, wonky, messy, wrong.
Wires sprouted from her back as her claws grew bigger, losing their crisp darkness and taking on a faded greyish hue like even her colours were being tarnished by whatever was going on.
“Aaaah…” Kit’s voice sounded rougher, deeper, strange as her body oozed and melted, wires poking through, revealing some mechanical components beneath along with bones like her very on-display ribs, which were covered and uncovered by her sludgy, decaying form as she moved.
“Kit…focus?” Shard said, but it was hard.
Thoughts hard…Can’t focus…
Kit could see.
Kit could smell.
Most of all Kit could feel. She felt her body all over, decaying, decomposing, but surviving nonetheless. It felt weird, it felt gross, slimy and squishy and she was all over and moving and dripping. Thinking so hard. Thoughts fraying.
Destroy…Decay…Corrode…Corrupt…
Kit lifted a large forelimb, dripping globs of herself as she did so before it slammed down to the ground. She was large, big, intimidating, her very appearance and stench reeking of a terrifying, undead monstrosity that should not be.
Her jaw hung open, revealing a cavernous, empty maw, her very breath full of decay. Just breathing near a signpost had the metal texture corroding and the data structure beneath corrupting, collapsing.
“Er…Kit, just…” Shard looked to his phone, all of Kit’s memory values were flashing red, corrupted. REFORMAT? The phone asked him, but he couldn’t reformat his friend! He…didn’t know what to do?
Another heavy hand slammed down as Kit dragged herself along the ground leaving a trail of decay in her wake, the ground either damaged, corroded, or even missing textures or fuzzing out. Her very existence was a miasma of rot. Shard looked to his phone, seeing that Kit’s classification had changed from Gazimon to Raremon.
“Kit, we can fix this, just…give me a minute,” Shard panted, what to do? What to do? But Kit didn’t reply, simply moving on slowly with him following as she sought something, running on instinct now…Data…She needed fresh data…She needed to consume new data to stabilize her body…Yes…
She needed to consume Digimon…
She needed their data…
No thoughts…Only instinct…
No cute, only rot.
No memory.
Only instinct.
Only sliding her gelatinous, rotting body across the ground. Only putrefying everything it touched.
It was Raremon!
