Photographed from the mainline train, this is the HQ of the Fairbourne Railway.
This railway was originally built as a 2ft gauge horse-drawn tramway and it opened in 1896, linking the former Cambrian Railway station, at Fairbourne with the ferry, plying across the Morfa Mawddach to and from Barmouth. In 1916, W. J. Bassett-Lowke rebuilt it into a 15in gauge steam railway, before John Ellerton re-gauged it to 12.25in in 1986, simply to accommodate engines (in the shape of half-size copies of 2ft gauge prototypes) and coaches he had been running on his railway in France. It continues to run today in its 12.25in gauge form.
