I guess the next panel makes more sense then, if he's trying to figure out if his trainer is working in bad faith. I had to check the difference between the two words after reading this, and it doesn't seem like he's trying to bear a burden of being watched or even holding the raise or whatever, he's trying to figure out stuff in his brain.
