North American Furs #26 - Front Cover
I was approached to do the next cover for North American Furs (more info here). Outside my own personal projects, this is my first cover project so I'm quite proud.
Underlying theme is creativity and inspiration, as represented by the basic-colored butterflies. For the time being, I'll keep the true inspiration of the piece underwraps but I'm sure that the back cover image (which I'll be posting in a moment) will give it away.
I went with designing average characters as opposed to using a collection of my own. This zine is a collection of art from a variety of other artists and I felt it would have been too self-serving to splash all my characters onto the cover. The animals were chosen to represent other artists (or their representative characters) I've met; not necessarily matching gender, just species.
The 'NAF' title for this was created by myself just as a placeholder to play with the glow effect, but was ultimately chosen for the final design.
As for the issue itself, I'm sure it will be available on SecondEd and Rabbit Valley soon.

NAF is a fanzine, the classic black and white fanzine only with modern production techniques. Members send in their art by mail or FTP upload and their tribs are collected and printed to be shared out. Members get free copies of the 250-300+ page book that have special member only versions complete with comment pages that the public never sees. Comments are left by members about their tribs and others. Public copies are sold without this extra content and the money pays for keeping the title going. It is only possible because Tibo puts so much of his own personal money into this.
It's a pretty awesome book. I've been in there since the beginning.

This cover really impressed me as the glowing effects really stood out, and I'm not certain I've never seen such a thing attempted on a fanzine cover before. The image reminded me of an "All Souls" celebration held in Japan where thousands of tiny paper boats with lit candles in them are sent down a river and out to sea. The image is charming though, and really shows off your skills as a digital artist.
