Before Alpinism became a thing, mountain peaks were the most inaccessible natural element to humankind. This made dragon legends spread throughout the Alps, making their peaks get populated with all sorts of terrible dragons.
Maybe they're still there, getting better at hiding due to the overtourism plaguing their homes, but still observing you from a distance.
