So, this guy brought me this guitar saying that the guy he bought it from scalloped the frets with a needle file.
yeeeeesh...
Ok, so first of all, scalloped frets in IMO are kind of a ridiculous mod. I would personally recommend against it. It looks weird, feels weird and is irreversible. Also, a needle file??? Really???? That must have taken this guy hours which is unfortunate because the job certainly didn't look like it was worth it. there were groves and file marks every where and he nearly went all the way down to the side dots in a few spots. My camera really wasn't able to do justice to it.
The customer wanted me to make it look better so that he could have a decent player or at least get a bit more money for it if he decided to flip it. I told hIm I would do what I could.
I started by busting out the heavy shit, aka my 100 grit sand paper.

Yeah, I call that kind of showy mod "guitar jewelry" and I tend to recommend against it. This kind of thing can really ruin your day if you decide you dont like it afterwards.
I my customer seemed to play a lot of 80s van halen-ish stuff. I have no idea what the guy that did this played.

I could see that working for like those two handed tapping runs up and down the fretboard.
Still though.... the right frets, man... come on... the right frets... Same idea, but a higher resale value.
I went through your gallery, it is full of fun little projects.

I used to do some luthier on the side a few years ago, but I could never land a permanent.

Yeah, I really wonder about that. I mean, this was a bolt on neck. I am sure that he could have found another one the same scale and length and used it. Maybe the guy just wanted to try his hand at doing soe guitar work and started out with something a little too heavy. That's a common scenario.

There is some old luthier projects in there as well. This account is relatively new and I have been doing this kind of work for quite a while.
Nice telli btw:) Its one of my favorit guitars. They are simple and elegant. They have this vaguely art deco look to them as well which makes me all happy in my pants.

I am a mid century modern man myself. So what better way to celebrate that than to have a Hawaiian influenced solid body electric.
I love this guitar. I played every guitar I could find for the better part of a year before paying too much for a used guitar. Nothing else I have found cuts though effects like the high end of a tele. Especially with slapback echo, or pitch shifting (digitec whammy).
I will check out your account. I love talking tech anytime. If you are ever bored, hit me up.
