Wild Cards: Jack and Ace, Part 9
After school, Elisa was slower to walk out, for she was trying to spot her only friend on his way to the buses. There was no sign of him at first, how hard was it to see a kid with special needs like Isaac’s. Apparently harder than spotting a jock of a bull because one snuck up right behind her. Elisa just briefly felt the straps jerk in a direction, and her backpack came clean off as she turned to see what was happening.
“Hey, that’s mine!” Elisa shouted, jumping to grab it
This ox just raised his arm, keeping the pack just out of reach, “Yeah, right, I bet half of it is sold to buy your stash.”
“This isn’t funny.” She tried to reach for it and ended up getting a hand right in her face, “Cut it out!”
“What’s the fussing for, all of a sudden?” the ox said, and he side-eyed the backpack, “Are you on campus with the good stuff?” He rested it on his horns, and reached to unzip it.
“Stop, just give it back” Elisa shouted, she couldn’t let him see her costume or fireworks, “Give it back!” but she was shoved to the ground right after that.
Someone else grabbed the bull’s arm, “She said, GIVE IT BACK.” It was a familiar voice, but it made the ox back away immediately, and feel his arm. Issac was glaring at this ox the entire time, “Now are you gonna listen?” He walked toward this ox. “Give. It. Back.” mist was bellowing from his mask.
The ox still held his arm, despite the sleeves, there was frost where Isaac grabbed him. He looked between Isaac and Elisa, then he took the bag off his horns and tossed it over. While Isaac caught it, the ox ran off.
Isaac checked the outside of the bag, it was worn and weathered, but hasn’t been opened. He looked to Elisa and walked over to her, “Here. Are you okay?”
Elisa got back up, and then took it from him. She smiled softly, hugging her belongings. She looked back at the fox who helped her, “Thank you.” she was on the verge of tears as she smiled.
She reached out to hug him, and Isaac immediately backed away from his stoner friend.
“Right, sorry.” Elisa giggled, “I forgot you don’t like hugs.”
“I do, actually… I’d love them.” Isaac said, “It’s just my condition. Everything hurts me when it’s too hot, and I hurt others when I’m too cold.”
“Oh… That’s how that sickness works?” Elisa said, “Sorry to hear that.”
“It is what it is.” Isaac said, “Just have to work with what life gives us. I guess.”
“I like that way of seeing things.” Elisa giggled, then she skipped and spun ahead of him, “I’m actually dirt poor and no one likes me, but I’m still around doing what I like.”
“Well, I think a few people like you.” Isaac said, “So do you take this way home too?”
“Nah, but I got a lot of free time.” Elisa smiled, “Let’s just talk.”
