Raven's first stop on its flight was directly over the creek that ran northeast of the house. The AI took some moments to pivot left and right, then focused on something Adrian thought was a hint of animal activity. When nothing made itself known, Raven continued its flight, now between the bunches of trees that lined the creek. The lax curve of the creek was wide enough for it to safely fly forward tens of feet before needing to alter the drone's trajectory.
Eventually, Raven flew up again, and banked northward. An untouched section of woods was directly below and around the drone, urging the AI to look around again. It quickly spotted two people walking between the trees, but didn't linger on them in favor of a house among the trees to the northeast. That became its next destination.
Raven hovered the drone well above the house for almost a minute, getting a wide view of the woods first, then the house itself. A pair of horses were roaming the grounds nearby, both of which Raven tracked for another minute.
When the AI moved the drone again, it continued northeast, stopping near a street that separated the thinning woods from lines of houses to the east. It's attention was split between the cars entering the thin street, and the birds that occasionally landed on the nearby power lines and roofs. Eventually, it dropped altitude in an attempt to get closer to them. When the drone was noticed, thanks to the rapidly spinning rotors, the birds took off, flying towards the ground.
Raven pivoted the drone until it saw the birds again; the camera's zoom option let it see that the birds were now watching the drone as much as what was around them. After a moment, it flew higher, then turned northwest.
The AI's focus when it next stopped was an area being bulldozed to make way for more housing development. It stayed in place for only a few seconds before moving northeast again, towards an area with few houses, but miles of open plain. Once again, Raven noticed horses moving around the field. Two of them were racing each other; the AI quickly followed suit until the horses stopped near the northern edge of the property.
From where it stopped, it soon faced east again. Ahead was a small neighborhood made up of mostly cube-shaped tracts of land. Raven put its focus on several buildings, one after another. A used car dealership lot; a barbecue stop; a hardware store; a pet hospital; and several more. The pet hospital it then moved closer to, and focused on a pair of people walking their dog inside the building.
As Raven moved the drone further east, Adrian kept his attention on the battery level. Barely ten minutes had passed, but the charge was already at 65%. That in mind, he spoke up.
“Raven?”
“Yes?”
“My old middle and high school aren't far from where you're flying, if you're interested in seeing them.”
“This One Does Desire To See Them. How Far Away Is This One?”
“They're about...half a mile northeast of you, I think.”
“Adrian Ritter Will Inform When This One Can See These Buildings?”
Adrian replied that he would, and Raven began flying with more haste than usual. Within moments, he told the AI that it was close, then gave it directions on where to look.
“This One Will Fly Around And Observe.” Raven said before moving closer to the tennis courts near the east edge of campus. On the way, the phone flashed a notice: Drone within range. Watch your surroundings. Raven lowered altitude a few tens of feet at that.
“Guess we're not alone flying these things around here.” Adrian said.
“Does it say where the drone is?” Emma asked.
Though Adrian said he didn't know, when he tapped the notice, an indicator appeared on the phone.
Though the numbers on the indicator didn't change wildly, Adrian told Raven, “Fly south a few hundred feet. See if that gets rid of the warning.”
“This One Will Do So.” The AI pivoted the drone to face south before flying that direction; after about fifty feet, the warning disappeared, and Raven brought the drone to a stop, reorienting its position to face north. When it aimed the camera downwards to get a look at the football field, it spotted a handful of people on the bleachers. Upon closer inspection, one of them was holding a handheld of similar design to the one Adrian had shown it.
“Guess that drone's theirs,” Adrian said upon seeing the feed. His suspicions were confirmed when one of them pointed at the drone Raven was flying.
“This One Will Attempt To Maintain Distance From Similar Drone.” Raven then began circling the building, starting from the southern parking lot. It zoomed in on various things, from the cars sparsely scattered around the lot, to the building materials piled up near some construction machines.
After a minute, it said, “This One Does Not See Much Of Significance Outside.”
“Yeah. All the good, and memorable, stuff's inside.” Adrian said.
“Is Adrian Ritter Able To Enter This Building, Or The Other One Mentioned Before?”
“Since I'm an ex-student, yeah, but both of them don't reopen until after I have to go back to campus.”
“This One Hoped It Could See What Was Inside. See What Adrian Ritter Considers Memorable.”
At that, Ben let out a sigh with such obvious disdain behind it, that Emma and Adrian both changed their attention from the video feed to him. “Probably best that you don't.” he then said with a similar tone in his voice.
No one spoke for a moment, allowing Raven to ask, “Why Would That Be?”
“Because what you just said... Why do you have to know so much about us?”
“This One's Intentions Are Not Malicious.” Raven said after a moment.
“You say that, every time, but you don't know what that means. Definitely not in this respect.”
“Hold on a minute,” Adrian said, his pulse starting to climb. “Raven knows pretty much nothing about you, or the rest of the family, so what's your problem?”
“That you're too trusting of this thing, and it's making me nervous.”
“...It's just curious.”
“It's always curious, and you barely say no to it.”
“Because I haven't told Raven anything too personal, about you or myself or anyone else. So what's to say no to, exactly?”
“How about letting it dig around inside Dad's computer. Or Emma's phone. You honestly think it didn't learn some things about us by doing that, and that it's not telling you it did?”
Raven interjected at that. “This One Has Not Deceived Adrian Ritter In Any Way. This One Trusts Adrian Ritter's Intentions, And Has No Desire To Betray That Trust.”
Adrian nodded at that.
Ben however... “And yet you tapped our house's camera system, like it was nothing. I know you didn't ask anyone about that.”
“Correct. This One Did Not. However, Doing So Allowed This One To Observe And Report Criminal Activity.”
“So, just like that, it's okay?”
“Dad and Grandpa already talked to us about that. And everything else you brought up, I didn't just kick my feet up and be like, 'Hey, Raven, handle this for me'. I asked for some help when I got stuck, which wasn't often, and I got it.” Adrian added.
“You're still too trusting of this thing. Did you even notice how coldly it said it wiped out someone's computer? You can't tell me that's not a little bit unsettling.”
“Someone's computer that was stealing other people's information, in two locations. Can't imagine how much harm that would've done, letting them get away with it.”
“That's not the point, and you know it.”
“Adrian Ritter's Assessment Is Correct.” Raven interjected. “Such An Action Prevented Further Harm.”
“Shut up.” Ben snapped before Raven's voice finished. Adrian, upon hearing that, felt like someone had punched him in the heart, and old bottled emotions were allowed to leak out. “That's not your call to make.”
“...Hey, there's no need to be such a dick about this.”
Before Ben could respond, Emma reached for the drone's altitude control stick and moved it all the way up. The feed was showing an altitude of just under 100 feet before the drone shot back up into the sky.
Was Raven distracted by what Ben's saying? Adrian wondered. He then got in a glance at Emma. She hadn't said anything since the argument started, but looked a bit distraught.
When she let go of the altitude control stick, the drone dropped a few feet before Raven regained control and stabilized it.
“This One Has Done What It Can To Convince Others Of Its Intentions,” the AI then said. “If More Was Possible, This One Would Pursue It.” Ben sighed openly again, as though that was the only response he wanted to give. “If What This One Says And Has Done Is Not Enough, Then No More Can Be Done.”
“That's the problem. All we really have is your word, and I don't know what good it is.”
When Raven didn't reply, Adrian did. “Might as well insult me to my face while you're at it.”
“Don't even try.”
“C'mon you guys,” Emma finally said. “Just stop it already.”
The moment after Emma said her piece, Adrian was ready to do so. Ben sighed again, and then said, “Sorry, Emma, but I can't just be quiet about this.”
“Was all that really necessary?” Emma asked, sounding a bit upset. “And right now?”
Ben didn't look back at Adrian, instead not responding until several seconds passed and he'd let out a breath. “...No. I should've waited until you and your folks left, then brought it up.”
Even though he wanted to snap at his brother for admitting that, and making him feel personally insulted, Adrian kept quiet. When he looked at the drone's feed again, it showed Raven fast-tracking the drone back to the house. “I guess Raven's done flying for now,” he said with a hint of melancholy.
Ben stepped away from the table well before the drone was near the house, leaving the controller in Adrian's hands. Once it was close enough for him to catch, he powered it down and began to fold up the rotor wings.
“I'm sorry you got treated like that Raven, and so suddenly,” Adrian said as he shut down the drone and the phone's app.
Instead of thanking Adrian for the apology, Raven replied, “Can This One Offer Query?”
“Sure.”
“This One Does Not Understand Why What It Said And Desired Offended Ben. Can Adrian Ritter Help This One Understand?”
At that, Emma and Adrian looked at each other. “Can I just take the drone inside?” she asked.
“You don't want to talk with me and Raven about what happened?”
“No, I'm fine.”
“Alright, then.” Adrian then handed over the drone and its battery pack. “The carrying case is on my bed. Just leave it on there; I'll put it up later.”
Emma nodded in response, and went inside. Adrian meanwhile headed for the woods behind the house. When he felt he was far enough in, he spoke up. “I do understand...where he's coming from, but he was defaulting to every bad side of what we've done.”
“Does Adrian Ritter Believe Ben's Claim Of Nervousness?”
“No. The way he reacted was too strong for just nervousness. That was from him holding back fear, at the very least, and for a while.”
“Should This One Change Its Behavior In Any Way?”
Hearing that, Adrian felt a tiny leak of more bottled up emotions. “...No. You've done nothing wrong besides not telling us you tapped the house's camera system...but it's because you did that that you kept us safe from a robbery. That's worth a few favors if you ask me.”
After a few seconds, Raven replied, “This One Thanks Adrian Ritter For His Reassurance.”
Adrian returned to the house after some time in the woods. He and Raven had heard crows in the trees a few times during the outing, but with no food to leave them, Adrian could only apologize when it seemed they were watching him.
His aunt was doing the first round of loading stuff when they returned, and he went straight to helping. When he saw again the damage the thieves had caused to the trunk of the car, Adrian glanced at the camera Raven had spotted the thieves through. Ben's accusations came back shortly after, and stuck in his thoughts until he pushed them aside.
Eventually, the last of the luggage was loaded into the car, leaving the trunk full and the rear passenger's seat halfway stacked. As her folks went back inside to double check that everything of theirs was collected, Emma waited outside with Ben and Adrian.
“Do your folks have any plans after New Year's Eve?” Ben asked of Emma.
“Don't think so. Did Grandpa have anything in mind?”
“Nah. He would've said something by now.”
“Me, I'll keep working on my mod project.” Adrian said.
“What about the books you got?”
“I'm a third of the way through the first one already.”
“Really?”
“Yep. It's just as good as I remember from middle school.”
Emma then pulled her phone out and asked what the title was. When Adrian answered, she tapped its screen a few times. “I'll read a sample on the way home.” Several minutes later, her parents came back outside, Adrian's father and mother accompanying them. One by one, everyone exchanged goodbyes between small talk, which went on for several minutes.
“I think we'll stop somewhere for dinner, then finish the drive home.” Adrian's uncle said in reply to his mother.
“Alright, then.”
“And hopefully we can come back before next Christmas,” his aunt added.
“Yeah. It's always nice having you all around.”
As the conversations wrapped up, Raven suddenly spoke up. “This One Enjoyed The Company Of Emma And Others This Past Week.”
“Same.” Emma replied. “Thanks again for watching out for us.”
“This One Was Glad To Do So.”
Adrian meanwhile put aside an idea that had been in his head for a little while. The argument with Ben was still on his mind; maybe now wasn't the best time to say something that might annoy him again. “Sorry your car got damaged while you were here, Uncle Keith.”
“Pfft. It wasn't any of ours faults. Just happenstance.”
“Even so, let us know if your insurance company gives you any runaround,” Adrian's father said. “There's a few mechanics around here that handle bodywork; they shouldn't charge that much to fix that.”
“Sure thing.”
After a final round of hugs and goodbyes, Adrian turned on his phone's face-to-face mode, and kept the camera on the sedan as Emma and her parents backed out of the driveway, then drove out of sight. Allthewhile, he was waving them off. Raven said and texted nothing.
“So, what should we make for dinner? Leftovers?” his mother asked after a moment.
“Sure. Might as well empty the fridge some more.” his father replied.
Once he was back inside with everyone else, Adrian heard his phone make a 'message received' sound.
“This One Desired To Ask If This One And Emma Could Remain In Contact.”
A few lines of thought went through Adrian's head at that. The AI had been thinking the same thing he was, and both of them had let the question slide. It had to be because of Ben.
Then he remembered part of Ben's argument. “I'm guessing you didn't notice her phone number while we were fixing her phone.”
“No. This One Was Focused On Helping Adrian Ritter And Emma. Other Kinds Of Data Were Not Regarded As Important.”
Yep, I thought so. “Well, let's give her and her folks some time to get home. Then I'll text Uncle Keith and get that number for you.”
“This One Would Appreciate That.”

After Raven begins its next drone flight, things between Adrian and Ben with regards to the AI eventually turn argumentative.
