Thank you. I had intended to kill her off, because I hate the "perennial adversary" trope, but as I wrote the story I realized she'd make an interesting foil to Kathy. I don't want to change her basic personality, just show how she will react when the situation is different.
There's a certain sense of honor to her character. I may need to read through some bits as a refresher, but while she might be cold, callous, and ruthless, I wouldn't say she quite crosses the line to full "evil". As she admits, there's something she admires in Kathy, a quality she knows she herself lacks. And in that admiration is a level of respect, in a sense. She does make a good foil, because I believe both can learn from each other; compassion is not a weakness, but sometimes a degree of ruthlessness is warranted. I may be wrong, but from a political standpoint, I think the Duchess is like that.
She seems to have realized a concept one of my characters taught her students years ago; called "True Power."
As Byrna explained it: Anyone can hold a gun to someone's head and demand obedience. "True Power" is the ability to convince someone to obey in a manner in which that person gives you power over them willingly. This is done by making them believe that you have their best interests in mind, and then by using this power in pursuit of that benefit.
