The construct now known as "Slick" started life many years ago as an experimental military AI, created to pilot complex war-machines. Before the AI could undergo testing, however, laws were passed across the majority of known-space that outlawed mass-production of complex Artificial Intelligences, especially for use in conflict. As a result, the AI was deactivated just after its first prototype model had come online, and was placed into deep storage. That is, until the CEO of PrismaTek Industries, one of the largest tech companies around had managed secure the AI in a black market deal.
When the Megacorporation's latest product was sabotaged by a rogue former employee, leadership scrambled to salvage what remained of the project. Originally envisioned as a pacifistic support unit for law enforcement in large cities, PrismaTek instead sought to repurpose the A.N.N.O program and sell them on the black market to private military contractors as near indestructible, highly adaptable combat drones.
With production suffering devastating setbacks thanks to the aforementioned rogue employee wiping nearly all of the data on the A.N.N.O project's previous AI models, and a live demonstration for investors rapidly approaching, the old military AI that had previously only been used as a reference point was uploaded into the nanomachine network that pilots the unit's gooey body.
Project staff gave the unit the nickname of "Slick", thanks to the fact their body resembled a living oil slick. The construct displayed a remarkable level of intelligence, and even personality. However, it would also prove to be extremely uncooperative, disruptive, and difficult to reprogram to suit the new project's needs.
Completely uninterested in serving the whims of their new "creators", Slick escaped the PrismaTek facility, and hitched a ride on the first ship off-world. Now, they live on the run while they roam the stars, searching for some sense of purpose in their life.
