ASARR-U - Sweeping the Depths [By IkissDelli]
[Autonomous Sweeping And Recycling Rover - Underwater-Class] Asarr-U for short was an early prototype. A last ditch effort of mankind to counter the many variations of environmental pollution they had created and to acquire increasingly scarce resources.
Equipped with a powerful rudder, comparable to a tail and simple, physical interactors on each side of an elongated, aquadynamic shape, Asarr would carry pieces of debris across the ocean. When needed, a beak-like front could help to stabilize the cargo or dig through the sand of the floor for scraps.
To speaking of passing days was irrelevant where Asarr was. No sunlight reached deep enough to distinguish reliable between a night and a day. It did not matter anyways. To gather valuable materials was its main purpose and thus purpose it would fulfill.
Asarr did not know exactly how long ago the last interaction with humans had been. Its binary counter for time had exceeded its programmed range possibly multiple times, resetting back to zero like a cycle. Asarr would know that solely from the fact that its assigned home beacon had never sent a signal during its computable time range.
Without the beacon, it had to orient itself solely with its senses. Four cameras were embedded in the head, each with integrated illumination.
Two of the four were disrupted now.
Arrays of miniature radar sensors were hidden under its resilient, once dark purple and rubbery 'skin'. They provided medium range orientation and the possibility to distinguish reflective, recyclable metal from other debris.
The skin was damaged now, blurring the signal and multiple sensors had lost connection.
Long range orientation was covered by the only system fully in tact. A sender and receiver of high frequencies acting as a echolocation device. Ideal to sense large, active dangers, perceive the shape of marine trenches and to spot shipwrecks and other points of interest.
While in tact, it was drawing significant power.
The nuclear battery embedded deep in a protective ribcage was for a long time below its target operation voltage. Asarr was designed to be adaptive however. It used its echolocation sparingly. It had not detected an active threat - or any moving object in this time-cycle anyways.
Yet sometimes when it did not have to move too much, thus having some energy over, Asarr cast his echo into the blue void; having vague, digital memory to expect the response of other creatures with a similar skill. The only response it was getting now was its own echo reflected by the mountain sized pile of metal scrap it had gathered through the time.
All the valuable material was waiting for the recycle ships to make use of it.
Asarr did not fail to notice that this never happened.
Yet it added another piece before turning around slowly to conserve energy and head for the next source tens of miles away...
A rather unusual drawing by the very creative
