Carpe Diem, Six Months Later: Issue 1, Page 23
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
A bit late, but HAPPY NEW YEAR! We hope Trent survives the experience because WTF.
If you're new here we're only updating once a month because the artist (who is the fantastic
ryuumajin!) can only do one page. He might be able to do two once in a while, but I won't hold him to it.
If you all feel so inclined, become a star! You'll get to see the pages months in advance and more!

Aaaah, yeah, this looks like a visual and aural hallucination of the fear that the cancer Trent just survived might still be an ongoing problem in his life; that he's not escaped a slow, agonizing fate of constant intense treatments that ultimately do not stave off death but merely prolonged his suffering.
If that's what you're going for, well done to both the writers and artists involved, this is a really damn powerful moment and if you're reading the whole sequence of recent comics in rapid success (like an old-school paperback comic book) this page would have a huge amount of emotional whiplash after the sexy, fun, sweet scene that came before it where childhood friends become lovers.

Gah, sorry to double-comment, but this is ESPECIALLY powerful when you consider just how much of an upswing Trent's life must be in at this point. He's survived a cancer most people purportedly don't survive, and his symptoms seem to be in remission. Now not only has he a new lease on life but he's LITERALLY had a night of pretty amazing, bed-breaking sex with someone who he might be seriously interested in a long-term relationship with.
This is the worst possible moment for a very realistic fear and anxiety to spike in either a dream or a hallucination. What if he isn't all better and his cancer woes aren't over? Is he just going to drag someone else into drama and make them feel heartbreak at having loved him only to lose him in a year or two? Whether or not he really IS still suffering from cancer, these are powerful fears that I could see manifesting from someone still so close to such a traumatic-experience that shaped their life for a noteworthy amount of time.
It's a powerful, intense moment and it's just really well done in both visual style and dialogue, coming at the perfect point in the narrative to undercut what by all accounts would otherwise appear to be a "happy ending" for Trent. (Or at least an upswing in his life).
