It is with no shortage of honor that I may speak with you plainly, headmistress. Having held position of Lord Erudite for many years before you I bid you heed not only your ambitions but the presently disregarded sensibilities that once laid the foundation of your success.
The archives we walk daily, the studies we hold together, this unity of purpose are what bring strength to us as a city and ensure that those who come after are educated in these destructive matters...that we all may benefit from their indoctrinated sense of vigilance. Research is a vital part of our successes and at risk of hypocrisy, I must ask you to consider the failings my own past experiments. Endorsements of those whose minds see the word differently, moreseo even than those whose lives have been spent in academia, should be treated with no shortage of caution despite how much we may love to see them flourish under the full capabilities of our institution.
Information is power, and this draws both the actors who would profit for themselves alone just as well as calling to the rare few whose minds will carry us forwards in knowledge and in wisdom. And while tradition calls for us to always believe the best in our acolytes there have always been those that we must be ready to turn away or hinder for the safety of ourselves and all we have learned. A single match can destroy a millennia’s worth of information in a day, but the wrong knowledge flowing beyond these walls can set the whole country aflame.
I have spoken to your newest protégé since you last informed me of her latest proposal and grow increasingly concerned that your own excitement on what are admittedly very promising results may overshadow our standards of good study. Prodigy she may appear, delving into historical records have indicated years of falsified education and a complete lack of interpersonal relations with any one of my contacts within our wider community. Enthusiasm infectious as plague does not make for real experience and liars should not be trusted with the learnings I’ve heard her espouse. I fear her gestures are those I’ve seen in trained battlemages and she carries herself with the weight of one who knows exactly how dangerous casting can be.
It is frustrating, not knowing what to do, and so I must request your guard be raised around her. Caution around unknown variables is only proper for those of us whose claws must shield this shattered home from another cataclysm. One of my own kind this far from home is not what I would consider a sign of good fortune; I’d rather a home within which to study than the charred husk of one’s ruinous enterprise, be it noble in design or lesser so.
