Charlie Radcliffe spent the first twenty or so years of his life with his head in the clouds and both ankles chained to the earth. While the rich and powerful, the politicians, the employed and the enlisted all got to go to space and help secure humanity's place in the Milky Way, he tried and failed to make anything at all of himself, only to find himself in his own way at every turn. The military scared him. STEM courses bored him. The trades exhausted him. The list goes on. Ultimately, he burned out, hard.
In a post-First Contact world which was now, in fact, being occasionally visited by aliens, UFO-chasing enjoyed a new legitimacy as a fringe hobby for those with transportation and too much time on their hands. People like Charlie. So, with the alternative being to continue squirming around in his own personal abyss, he set off to try his luck at finding the aliens in his cosmic backyard.
Instead, Charlie found the arcane. It turns out that there are more ways to leave a celestial body than simply "up".
A desperate fight for survival in a hostile realm. A trial by fire, unexpectedly revealing his potential as a magician. A mysterious tutor with dark secrets and ulterior motives. Mystery, action, horror, drama, romance... suffice to say, it's a long story, and the way Charlie tells it makes it feel even longer. What matters— the only part of that whole mess that does, now— is that he finally managed to find something he's good at, while at the same time scoring himself a ticket to the stars. In a roundabout sort of way.
All this to say that when you see him, don't worry about the fact that he appears to be homeless, broke, creepy, and somewhat insane. He is all of those things, but more importantly, he's living his best life.
not super happy w/ how i draw humans (or don't draw them, rather), but it's still postable. Charlie has some lore, but operates largely as a self-insert for now; the world i build will be his oyster, but he won't matter much to it. the idea of putting him in awkward situations also greatly appeals to me. ::)
