What do I even need to say about this piece, just LOOK AT IT. Well here goes anyway, it was a gift from my amazing boyfriend Kalzo for valentines day, created by a very good friend of ours,
Azul, to remember something that happened to us on our beach vacation in South Carolina last year. We were just swimming at an indoor pool with a view of the beach. There were some storms out so we couldn't go out in the ocean, but we could still see it. One particular storm looked pretty nasty on radar so we kept an eye on it. Right in front of our condo it dropped a waterspout a couple kilometers out from shore, And then another, and another, and another.
This was already incredible to witness, but Kalzo being a meteorologist saw that this was more than a mere waterspout. He thought it was actually a supercelluar tornado that just happened to be over water, meaning that it could still hold its shape once it makes landfall. So off on a completely unexpected storm chase we went. We drove over 40 minutes, following the storm along the coast until we had to make a big decision. There was an inlet separating the beach, and the tornado would make landfall around that area. If we went to Ocean Isle Beach, we would be there quicker, but it might make landfall later and we would not be able to see it, going to Holden Beach meant we might show up to late and the tornado could already be gone. So we had to choose which one to go to, and we chose right. We drove all the way to the very end of Ocean Isle Beach, right up to the inlet. We almost drowned our car and then had to run up the actual beach, right to the water's edge, but we were just in time to witness our second tornado together. First on the water and then making landfall before fizzling out.
Azul got all the details right in this image. It is almost like I'm back on the shore again, watching the sky spin. From the house in the front, the inlet being basically exactly like it is in real life, to the tornado itself. He really got every single detail right. There is actually a video of this tornado and this exact moment, where you can see me and Kalzo first appear in shot with his car, and then running up the beach towards the tornado. It is really funny, and just shows how lifelike this image actually is. You can check it out here: https://x.com/wxbrad/status/1956113121132634607
