Spring, 1331
Every day the Tassurians had sent two human healers, captured in the earlier campaigns, to tend to Mera’s wound. The prisoners obviously were not thrilled about this duty and they tended to only change the dragon's wrappings when they thought that he was asleep. Thus Mera quickly learned to pretend to sleep when they visited.
The humans also complained a lot while treating the dragon, so he frequently overheard their thoughts about the current state of the war.
“Why do the Other Men always want us to tend to this wyrm?” One of the medical orderlies protested as the pair carefully and gently lifted Mera's arm with a treadwheel crane.
The dragon fidgeted slightly at the pain, causing the humans to pause in fear. Mera purposefully continued to feign unconsciousness. After a few minutes the prisoners summoned the courage to continue.
“The monster will probably eat us, that’s why. They don’t want to lose their own healers for it.” Grumbled the other human.
“That wouldn’t be very appreciative of this creature for us helping fix it up.”
“You don’t know what a dragon could do. Stupid monstrous beasts.”
The first healer carefully unwrapped the dragon's splint and bandages, gently removing the old poultice and cleaning up remaining signs of infection.
The other healer shook his head. “I don’t know why the Other Men are even bothering here. Aren’t they planning on slaughtering all the dragons anyways?”
That got Mera’s attention, though he tried to keep his facade up.
“They have to get the dragons to destroy us first.” The first orderly replied with an annoyed shrug. “Can’t do that if they all die before that happens.”
“Why would the Other Men want them dead anyways?”
The first healer snorted. “The dragons are too difficult to control. I’d want them dead too if I had no more need for them-they’re liable to turn around and bite your head off.”
The second healer stopped halfway through handing a fresh mass of medication to his partner. “So the Other Men want to use the dragons to destroy Auxia, then destroy the dragons after these creatures have eliminated the Auxian army for them. Just like for us when we serve our purpose.”
“Yes.” The other healer sounded like she was annoyed at educating a fool.
“Stupid Other Man games.” Came the reply.
“Well we’re still alive, maybe we’ll get lucky with this game. And get released at the end of this shitty war." The first healer applied the fresh poultice upon Mera's arm. "Hopefully this big dumb drake doesn’t eat us first.”
Her partner handed over a fresh roll of bandages. “How do you think they’d get rid of the dragons?”
“Well they Other Men are already bleeding them out in the fighting. I wouldn’t be surprised if they order someone to drop realgar into the beasts’ meals as soon as Caldern falls.”
Mera tried not to tense up.
“I heard they have the Dragon Queen locked up somewhere, and that’s why the dragons are with the Other Men." The second healer scratched his head. "You think they’re that intelligent?”
“Nah. If there is a dragon queen, it’s probably just some giant broodmother that all the dragons are related to. I’ll imagine that they poison any dragon queen first.”
The first healer carefully applied Mera’s fresh bandages around his injury, and gently wrapped up the dragon's splint.
“Eh looks like the arm’s healing. Maybe a couple of days and we’ll be lucky enough to be told to do something else.” The first healer nodded, and the second healer went over to the treadwheel crane and gently lowered Mera's arm back onto the ground. Relieved that their orders were completed without incident, the two healers quickly gathered their things and began to make something just short of a hasty exit.
“Guess they won’t be putting this one down.” The first healer finally joked as the pair exited the hospice.
“I hope the dragon didn’t hear that.”
“What? Even if it was awake the dumb beasts wouldn’t understand Auxian.”
“I dunno, there’s been some crazy stories I’ve heard. I don’t like tempting fate.”

Mera brooded in the quiet darkness of the hospice. That conversation had pierced him as deeply as any arrow or lance.
Humans liked to talk. They were bad at hiding things.
Were their rumors true?
The threat was way too real to ignore. It made too much sense.
The dragons had been forced into fighting for the Trasgu against the humans. The great wyrms hated humans. But they could never be happy about their coercion.
And the Trasgu must know that.
The Men of the Snows had been brazen, willing to seize the World Shaman and corral the dragons like sheep. Would they also be willing to kill all of them?
Of course they would.
You never should have trusted the Men of the Snows. They have hearts of iron.
Mera thought about Theragamorth. The copper dragon had died to seize that castle. Had it been for nothing?
The thought haunted him. Theragamorth may have indeed fallen over a worthless cause. But if the bronze dragon didn’t do something, then he may join his friend soon enough.
