Festival of Change Part 1: Fairly Standard
Cross-Posting this series from DeviantArt! (This is actually a combination of the first two parts, since the first is just a five-paragraph prologue and a drawing.)
Synopsis: Four friends attend a festival themed around transformation, and wacky hijinks ensue.

Alyssa smiled as she folded the last of her laundry. It was a cool Friday afternoon near the end of September, and she was getting all of her chores done early tonight. She was between surrogacies right now, which was perfect for what she had planned.
A ring of the doorbell drew her attention. Her smile grew as she put away the clothes, and grabbed a coat as she headed to the door.
When she opened it, she was met by Caddie, Gabby, and Agni. Caddie and Gabby both had bracelets of the other's favorite colors, while Agni had his signature red hoodie tied around his waist, putting his wolf shirt on full display. They were all also holding pinwheels of various colors, were wearing name tags, and their expressions were various levels of excitement.
"Festival of Change?" Alyssa smirked, already knowing the answer.
"Festival of Change!!" All three of them cheered.
Alyssa took a long inhale. The smells of various foods mixed with the fairgrounds to create such a uniquely nostalgic blend of smells. She'd been coming to this festival ever since they started, but this time was different. Not only was this the first time Gabby was with them, but Alyssa had actually volunteered to help at one of the booths this year — that's where she was now, helping the folks who ran it do some last-minute set-up.
"I really can't thank you enough for helping us," one of the booth's owners, a seafoam green otter, grinned widely.
Alyssa returned the gesture. "Of course! I'm really excited to be on this side of the festivities!"
The other owner, an umber grizzly bear, put his large arm around the otter's shoulder. "You're gonna love what we have planned; Dennis here has been practicing all year!"
Dennis blushed. "Oh, Rich, stop it; it's not that impressive...."
"It's impressive to me," Rich smirked, nuzzling his nose against his flustered partner's.
Alyssa rolled her eyes playfully as she continued to unpack the supplies.
Meanwhile, Caddie and Gabby were two stalls down, mingling with a barn owl Gabby knew. "How're the kids?" Gabby asked.
"Oh, they're doing great," the owl answered. "Jacob can preen all by himself now, Charlie's learning to fly, and this one," she patted her gravid midsection, "has finally settled on a craving: peanut butter and mice!"
"That's great to hear!" Gabby smiled, while Caddie gagged slightly at the craving.
"How about you? Told your folks yet?"
Gabby shook her head, "Not yet, but I'm getting there."
The owl put a wing on her hip. "Well, next time you see your dad, tell him he still owes me twenty bucks."
"Of course, Evelyn," Gabby chuckled.
Evelyn checked her watch. "Oops, I have to go; Maurice is supposed to be done by now."
"It was nice meeting you," Caddie waved.
"You as well, dear. Good luck with everything you have going on, too." Evelyn waved in return, before heading off into the crowd.
Caddie and Gabby began walking the other way, passing by busy stall after busy stall. "Isn't this great?!" Caddie beamed.
Gabby chuckled at her boyfriend's enthusiasm. "The actual festivities have barely even started..."
"I know, I know; I'm just excited to be here with you." Caddie gave her a gentle jab with an elbow, and they both smiled.
"So, whaddya wanna do?" Gabby asked.
Caddie scanned the stalls, spotting one in particular: a smaller one called Couples' Creatures. "What's that one?"
"No idea; let's check it out." Gabby suggested, and they changed direction to head over.
As they approached, they saw that the stand was run by a pair. One of them was a human woman with straight blond hair, blue overalls over a green shirt, and a cream sunhat; the other was a gray fox with wavy black hair, a red flannel shirt, jeans, a white cane propped up against his chair, and black-rimmed smart glasses over his clouded arctic blue eyes. Above them, there were two menus: one for different types of confectionaries, and the other listing different animal groups such as birds, rodents, fish, etc. There were also options for duration, ranging from an hour to two days.
"Hello there!" The woman greeted as they approached. "Welcome to Couples' Creatures, where we specialize in species transformations for couples. I'm Maria..."
"...and I'm Dustin," the fox continued, his voice as rough as a gravel road. "Take a look at our menus, then pick a combination of species, treats, and duration."
"One thing we ask, though," the woman added, "is that you eat them in the designated eating area - to make sure you don't try to use it on someone else, and to make sure we can give you a refund if something goes wrong." She gestured behind them, to a seating area where two couples were already sitting.
Caddie and Gabby looked at each other, then began to discuss among themselves. They spent a good few minutes talking, with Gabby texting her mom and Caddie texting Alyssa in the middle of it.
Finally, Caddie took out his wallet and put a twenty on the counter. "I want a lemon cupcake, and she wants a snickerdoodle."
"And what species would you like?"
"Bird, 24 hours."
Elsewhere, Agni was playing an AR game on his phone, when he almost ran into a sign. Luckily, he managed to stop himself, but he paused when he read what was on it.
Pie Eating Contest!
See who can eat the most of our magical pies, and win a custom-made pie to take home!
Starts at 8PM! See inside for details and sign-ups! →
Must be an adult — and must fully read/sign the contract — in order to participate.
Agni felt his stomach grumble. He'd been saving his appetite for the festival foods, but this seemed like an even better opportunity. He followed the arrow and found that it pointed towards a light blue tent. Next to it was four small picnic tables, all atop a large tarp that'd been laid on the ground. Odd. Agni took note of it, then headed into the tent.
A long table ran across the room like a countertop, with a bunch of papers in boxes below it, and a stepping stool on the other side. On the other side of the table, three portable ovens had been laid out, hooked up to gas lines and extension cords. Off to the left of the ovens was another tent flap, and through it, Agni could see a large table that held a dozen or so pies of various kinds.
And taking a pie out of one of the ovens was a sugar glider lady. She was barely taller than him, with brown-ish gray fur and cream-yellow highlights. Her darker red hair was tied into a loose ponytail between her round ears, she wore a light blue apron that said "Kiss the Pouch" over a purple shawl and sweatpants (modified to accommodate her patagia, of course), and her long tail bore an oven-mitt on it.
Agni waited until she had fully gotten the pie out of the oven before clearing his throat quietly. She turned and saw him, a surprised expression on her face. "Oh! Uh, hi there." She said with a slight Aussie twang. "I'm Rachel. Didja come to sign up for the contest?"
"I think so," Agni replied, still a little unsure.
"Wow," she breathed to herself, "four people this year..."
"Not a popular event, I take it?" Agni asked, to which the lady jumped.
"Did I say that out loud?" Agni nodded, and she blushed. "Yeah, I usually only get two or three to sign up."
She placed the pie onto the table with all the others, while simultaneously grabbing an un-baked pie with her tail. While she put it into the now open oven, she reached into the boxes and pulled out one of the contracts. "Please read this thoroughly; I don't want any misunderstandings about what's gonna be happening here." Agni nodded, then got to reading.
It wasn't a very long read, but it was still very thoroughly written. In short, it explained that each pie used a different transformation potion in its recipe, and that they would temporarily do various things to whoever ate them. The goal was to eat the most pie, while also dealing with the random transformations. The winner would receive a custom-made pie with an effect of their choice (within reason), which they would be able to take home with them. The contract was just to make sure that contestants consented to having these things temporarily done to them, and that she would cover costs if anything went wrong.
Agni pondered backing out for a moment, but then steeled himself and signed his name.
