Festival of Change Part 2: Change of Pace

Caddie and Gabby watched in awe as Maria and Dustin worked. Even with his sight impairment, Dustin was still able to tell which ingredients to grab based on smell alone. And the two of them were so in sync that they never bumped into each other, even when they suddenly changed direction to tend to something else.
Finally, the order was ready. "It'll only take effect once both of you are done," Dustin advised, "so you can finish at your own pace." They each took their chosen treat, and sat down in the seating area.
Just on time, Alyssa arrived. "Alright, I've only got a couple of minutes before I need to get back. You said you needed me to take some stuff?"
The two nodded, and handed her their bags, as well as Gabby's necklace and leg. "We'll also need you to take our clothes, too," Caddie requested.
Alyssa raised an eyebrow. "Some night you've got planned, huh?"
"Oh, it'll be more than a night," Gabby said, "but yeah."
"Well, bottoms up," Caddie said, and they held out their food in a sort of toast, before they ate.
Gabby finished first, since her snickerdoodle was much smaller. Even with the amount she'd seen get put in, she could barely taste the potion inside. She could feel the magic already tingling, but like Dustin had said, it only fully activated once Caddie finished his cupcake.
When it did, though, the effect was almost instant. Gabby was hit with a wave of vertigo before, in the blink of an eye, she found herself sitting eye-level with the table, in a pile of her own clothes. She could feel the sensation of feathers all across her body, her arms felt shorter while her fingers felt longer, and her leg felt even thinner than usual.
While Alyssa looked on, Gabby struggled to get out of her own clothes, taking inventory on her body as she did so. She was now a short-eared owl, about 14 inches tall, with brown and tan feathers all across her body, two long wings, and only one leg (thankfully, she had enough experience balancing on just one).
"Woah..." Gabby breathed, taking it in.
"Well," Alyssa blinked, "I personally wouldn't have chosen birds, but you do you."
Across from her, Caddie was experiencing something similar. Except, instead of an owl, he was a dark-eyed junco. He was about 6 inches in length, with slate-gray feathers everywhere apart from his belly, which was white.
"Neat!" he stated, before looking over at his partner. "Gabby, you okay?"
"Yeah," she called back, distracted by how soft her own plumage was.
Caddie wormed the rest of the way out of his clothes, then sized up the jump to the table, and leapt for it. It wasn't the most graceful, but he made it. He then leaned over the edge and waved his wing in her face, getting her attention. "Could you perhaps get out of your clothes so Aly can take them?"
"Oh, right!" Gabby blushed, then stood up, propping herself against the back of the chair. She grabbed Caddie's wing with her left wing, and the table with her right, and used the leverage to pull herself up.
"There ya go," Caddie said as Alyssa began to gather the clothes, then turned to his girlfriend. "So, do we wanna meet back up with her, or do we think we can get home ourselves?"
Gabby pondered, then had an idea. She took one of her socks, her phone, and her wallet from Alyssa, then put both inside. "There; now, we can call you with our plans."
"Sounds good," Alyssa replied. "I'll see you later." With that, she left.
"What now?" Gabby asked.
Caddie looked down at his wings, then, flapping them in the way he'd been taught, he began to shakily fly.
"Wow, you're already flying!" she exclaimed.
"It's a little different than with my dragon wings," he landed, "but it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it! You try it - just spread your feathers out, tilt them just so, and flap!"
Gabby did as was suggested, spreading her arms to find that her wingspan was more than double her height. Caddie was unsure why, but this made him feel flustered. She braced herself, then jumped off the table and flapped.
She stayed airborne for about a second, then landed squarely on her chest on the ground below.
Caddie was quickly by her side. "Are you okay?!"
Gabby was silent for a second.
Then she peeled herself off the ground. "Did you see that?! I got airborne!"
Caddie blinked, then laughed. "Yeah, you did!"
The kangaroo-turned-owl quickly got up. "Let's do it again!"
"Here, let me actually show you how to do it...."
Watching these two work through it together brought a tear to Maria's eye. This was exactly what she and her husband had started this for.
"...and if you do it like so," Caddie pushed off the ground once again, this time much more confidently.
Gabby, less sure than him, repeated the movements, and this time, she was actually able to stay airborne for some time. She wasn't very steady, but she wasn't hitting the ground, either. "H-hey, I'm doing it! I'm actually doing it!"
"Woohoo!" Caddie cheered. "That-a girl! Now, think you can steer yourself?"
Gabby tried to tilt herself, but instead, she almost spun out of control. Luckily, Caddie was there to nudge her back into a more stable flight pattern.
"Okay, maybe we'll only do straight lines for the time being. Now c'mon; let's see the festival!" With that, they began to fly off, Caddie making sure to keep pace with Gabby the whole time.
Alyssa arrived back at the stand and found a secure spot to stash all of Caddie and Gabby's stuff. After that was safely taken care of, she headed out to the front, where Dennis and Rich were talking to a customer.
"Let's see," Dennis was saying, "what's your favorite animal?"
The customer thought for a moment. "Probably a bobcat."
"Alright," Rich continued, "we can work with that. Any specific traits, or just in general?"
"In general."
Alyssa stepped forward. "Ooh, can I help? I've been practicing!"
"Sure!" Dennis smiled, opening up his spell book. Alyssa peeked over at the spell, and both of them began to draw forth their magic.
"This is my favorite part!" Rich watched on excitedly.
The two's arms began to wave in near-sync as they wove the complex spell. The magic matrix between them grew brighter and more complicated with each passing second. A little twist here, some dashes there, and an extra line of mana for a fluffier tail.
Then, right as they were about to reach the most complicated part, Alyssa's hand shuddered. The line she was weaving crossed into a different stream, causing a domino effect.
PWOOSH! The spell imploded in a flash of white, forcing Rich and the customer to shield their eyes. When it dissipated, they gasped as they realized that the spell had imploded onto the two casters.
Dennis had gotten out of it with relatively little damage; his fur had simply been discolored to an odd shade of copper, and his tail had been lengthened to resemble a cat's.
But Alyssa, being on the side that the fault started on, had taken almost the full brunt of it. Where she once was, there now sat a short-tailed bobcat with Alyssa's coloring and horns.
"Well," the bobcat stated, looking down at herself, "this isn't how I planned on spending my weekend..."
Agni settled down on one of the picnic tables, waiting for the contest to start. At another of the tables was a large ram (Tyrone, he would later learn) with a green bib, no shirt to cover his wool, and black sweatpants; and there were two small "reserved" signs, presumably for the other two contestants. Agni idly rubbed his nose, before taking out his phone and checking his socials.
"Agni!?"
He looked up at the familiar voice, finding Lex approaching the tables with his fiancé, Jamie. Both of them were wearing matching t-shirts with the logo of an old rock band on them, and Jamie had a tote bag with the festival's logo on it.
"Lex! Jamie! Man, it's been too long! How've you been?"
"Okay-ish," Lex admitted as they both sat down onto the bench. "Our weather vane broke during that storm, and it crushed part of the garden, so we had to spend a day fixing them."
"Honestly, it lasted much longer than I'd expected," Jamie admitted. "That thing was older than Lex is."
They all shared a chuckle. "Otherwise," Lex continued, "it's been standard. How about you? I hear you finally got your nose pierced?"
"Yeah!" He leaned over to show them the indent. "Still having trouble finding something that won't block my vision, though."
"Yeah, Caddie mentioned that." Lex rolled his eyes in amusement. "Anyway, I see that this competition drew your attention."
He shrugged "It was more of a 'why not' kind of thing, but yeah."
"Well, then," the snake smirked, "good luck beating me."
Agni blinked. "Wait, you're...?"
As confirmation, Lex used his tail to move the 'reserved' sign off the table.
"He does this every year," Jamie explained. "The best he's ever placed is second, but he feels this is his year."
"Correction: it is my year." Lex smirked.
"Whatever you say, hun," Jamie kissed him on the cheek for luck.
Agni held out his hand. "Well, then, may the best man win!" Lex took it with his tail, and they shook on it. With that, the area fell into relative silence.
"Oh hey, a short-eared owl and a junco," Lex stated suddenly, looking at the top of one of the nearby stands. "Neat."
Agni followed Lex's gaze, and sure enough, the two birds were perched there, overlooking the crowd. For some reason, the junco had its wing around the owl's back, and they had a familiar sock between them.
Then both of the birds waved to him. Agni did a double-take, then looked at Lex for confirmation. Unfortunately, his attention had already been shifted to Jamie. When Agni looked again, he only caught the briefest glimpse of them dropping behind the stand.
