WIP of a Commission for
daintydragon, done in Sai. Sadly, this will only be an inked piece when it's done, so all the shading's extraneous -- I just did it to get a good feel for the shape of the rocks, then kept going. I tend to do extra unnecessary work when I'm really tired X3
update: Looks like DD may want to have this colored after all! Yayyy!

gah, now i'm self-conscious. :D the shading took 3-4 minutes, total. i literally just scribbled all over and then threw down some blending. but I guess maybe it means I can afford to be a little sloppy when it does come time to get something done later! people say I overthink and overwork my pieces a lot of the time, and I'm trying to find a way to break that habit.
drop the brush to a lower density and build up on multiple layers while you're still feeling things out. :) I pick a color (like the purple, which I used for the entire image here) and then when it's time to do some shading I put in a new layer, add some color, then drop the opacity, repeat with additional layers on top that are all set to "multiply" and adjust the opacity of the layers as you see fit. it's a good way to "sketch" shading in without having to commit to anything. I used a regular ink brush here, but blew up the size, dragged up the minimum size to a little over 50%, dropped the density to around 40% and just went crazy. experiment with the settings. :)
