SCAVENGERS #3 PG08
Go go gadget ship tethers!
I do like doing dirty rusty and weathered surfaces. I don't know how they get so banged up in space, but apparently there's a lot of debris and few spaceship wash / gas stations available.

Actually rust from the inside can be an issue as poor ventilation and air flow can lead to localised condensation and moisture pooling/retention and the ship rusts from the inside out. Most likely to occur around structural ribs, less used/unused/store room corners and low traffic tubes/conduit areas or behind insulation materials. (yes we study this and actually still can't totally prevent some of the most basic issues like this)
You do a great job on giving them a weathered look. Scratches and dents would be pretty commonplace as space is full of little bits of dust and rock, and when you get even dust going a couple thousand miles per hour it'll leave some scratches. Rust would require an atmosphere but not necessarily oxygen. Though the most common type is red rust which is caused by oxygen with the aid of water, iron can rust in the presence of pure chlorine into green rust, though for both reactions a liquid medium must be present.
I have a theory that ships in deep space will corrode in ways similar to ships at sea. There is no oxygen or salt there, but there are all kinds of radiations and particles that have to interact with the hull in some way. Space is not really a vacuum, there is dust and micro meteorites. Even if these particles are very spaced from each other, when you are moving thought them at several miles per second, there has to be constant erosion.
