Meet Kolie, a new character for me to have fun with! :D
I've been toying on and off with the idea of making a mer-orca character for some time now only... I've never made the time to try and draw him.
The character isn't fleshed out my any means, nor is the world he comes from. I figure he'd exist in something like our own world, where things like mermaids and unicorns aren't considered real by most but still show up in stories.
In that world, Kolie IS real. I'm thinking of this sort of like a Little Mermaid story. He's curious about the human world even though his elders have long since stopped any major interaction with them.
Kolie is born an orca whale and does orca whale things, but he's really curious about the dry rocks and the green stuff he sees along the land and the humans he sees around the shoreline. Eventually he discovers he can do something that even his great grandmother was told was impossible by her great grandmother, which is that they can change into half-human and even human. I'll save how he discovers this for later, but eventually he will make some human friends and learn how to become fully human so he can go exploring their world with them. :)
As for his name.. The first human friend he makes (the only one who knows that he's really a whale) will remember being told an old story, something about a whale named Eh-kolie, though she can't remember the story itself and even gets the whale's name wrong and calls him Kolie. (She'd have called him his actual name if she could make whale sounds, so you see how him getting a new name for the human world would be sort of necessary.)
Kolie only figures out how to change into half-form in the beginning but will figure out how to become fully human after he makes his first human friend and begins to really long to be able to go and see all the places and people she tells him about back in her town. Once he learns he can change completely, he'll make more human friends. Maybe even try out human school! (He'd be in the late high school age range I'm guessing.)
I know, its kind of a simple, cheesy idea but having a cute, fun little world to let my brain retreat to and write about will be a nice change of pace. :)

There is only one thing that might make this marginally better... that's a hint that Kolie has a right arm. Just the edge of it seen behind the left arm would do, or perhaps a glimpse of a hand on the rock behind his butt. It's not altogether necessary, but would look a little more three dimensional I think.
His size would kind of change when he does. Upper part of him is human sized to give a point of reference. At the time the story would begin he's not quiet a fully grown whale. One day he'll have to make a decision whether or not to stay human or stay a whale cause the bigger he grows as a whale, the harder it'll become for him to switch back and forth.
