The old style "stahlhelm" the German troops wear often caused this to be mistaken for a badly researched WWII comic. In the story, the Germans had been using helmets similar to the Eurasian helmets seen here, and choose to adopt a more "German looking" helmet to avoid being mistaken for Eurasian soldiers.
And the real reason was I liked the old WWI 1916 pattern helmets with their big vent lugs sticking out of the side, and they are a good design which is why many modern helmets resemble their shape.
