Inspired by the Squibb Pharmacy paintings from the 1960s, I drew up my idea of what medicine might have been like through the ages for a race of semi-feline people. Here, a Tribal "Medicine Man" watches his people being decimated by a disease which none of his concotions seem to cure.

Actually, there's now evidence that smallpox existed in the New World -- and that the Great Plague following the Conquest /wasn't/ smallpox, but a as-yed-undiscovered native hemorrhagic fever.
The latter illness is also supposed to be responsible for a nasty disease outbreak that happened in the Four Corners back in the late 90's.
There should be more in an issue of DISCOVER magazine from (as I recall) last year, with interviews with the epidemiologists and archaeologists who've been doing the research, etc. Wish I could give more than this, sorry.

I think it must be very hard to be a doctor/healer/medicine fur....any mistake you make could cost someone their life, everyone looks to you to be perfect and blames you when things go bad or they don't get the help they need...and when the dookie hits the fan and everyone reaches out for your help, how many can you save?
