Don't know if it's really too bad.
Tanks definitely have a punch, but a tanks are dependent on the supply lines and support infantry to defend their backsides from missed enemy infantry.
The more dug in Eva's group is, the better their chances are. After all, the only real cover they have thus far are their tanks, while Eva's group has the entire town.

you're right bout it having punch but in tight urban inviroments they dont have the speed and manuverability they have in open terrain. They rely heavily on infantry cover to take out AT team and to scout routes and to clear them of mines or they can be channled into kill zones and nailed by artillery. As you can see that one tank rolled right in with out them reconning and rolled right over a mine...aside from taking out a track it might have killed or wouned some of the troop with the shrapnel.
Ideally, a tank should be brought into an urban environment only to reduce an enemy strongpoint that cannot be bypassed or overcome by other means. Infantry should go in first, as you suggest, with the tank holding back for a short distance, until a hard target is reached that artillery would have a hard time getting at, which would require a tank's attention.
Otherwise you get the Charlie Foxtrot that is shown here, in which the infantry is trying to cover behind the tank, allowing it to lead. In this case, straight into a mine (and a trap).

Combined arms! Always use combined arms. The 'Crunchies' flood in, and as defended strongpoints are found, the tanks annihilate them from a distance, or slam rounds into areas where sniper activity is suspected. Infantry + tanks + artillery in close terrain is a winning combo.
Sweepers!
The infantry can be compared to a sweeper. Sweeping up mines and AT divisions, locating targets for artillery and tanks which they can't clean up on their own.
Though in this case, maybe they didn't suspect hard defended position. Though that works totally in Eva's group's favor.
