Tikka is a collared aracari, a small member of the toucan family. She and her mate, Bajji were handraised and live with me in an indoor flight cage.

I've never heard of toucans as pets.

They don't really make good pets - they have very specific dietary requirements and are increasingly rare in captivity, but as aviary subjects they are fascinating and wonderful. :) They can be very tame, though, if hand raised - like these guys were.

Thank you! There are many different species, about forty of them (give or take a few depending on taxonomy disputes). The male is similarly colored, but he has a black dot on his chest - males and females of this species are the same but there is individual variation. :)

aww, how cool is that ^_^~ I've always wanted one of those buggars, mom used to have them in the petstore she ran with grams long ago. :x only thing she warned me about was their wet poopies and interesting diet. where did you get Tikka? it's so hard to find the guys x_X

so beautiful...she's a natural piece of art....my birds never cooperate for photos...my cockatiel attacks the camera and my green cheek runs from it...oh well...

My birds don't cooperate either, I just take a gazillion photos adnd a few end up turning out ok. I have some pretty funny ones of them trying to flee from or attack the camera. :>

Those two are beautiful, adorable birds! Aracaris are closely related to toucans, but are they related to hornbills as well?

Actually toucans and hornbills aren't related at all. Toucans are from Mexico/South/Central America and hornbills are from Africa/Asia. They just both have crazy ornamental bills. :)

No, she doesn't bite. They can sort of nip, but they don't have much strength in their beak (they can barely crush a grape with it!).

That's my kind of bird. :) I used to work at a pet store and got bitten by the parakeets... oh, pretty much every day, no matter how I handled them. To say nothing of the lovebirds and cockatiels...

Toucans are much quieter than parrots. Their typical calls are kind of soft and squeaky, they do have a kind of loud, shrill alarm call but it's nowhere near as loud as even a cockatiel.

Heh, I have been wanting a bird for a while ever since my sister's parrots when she lived at home ,but had to sell him when she went to school. Heh but they are alot of work , and I still love my pet Shrimp.
