Chapter 14
Carla could tell there was a lot missing from his story, why was that, did he not trust her, does he not remember, or maybe something really bad happened. Regardless Carla wasn’t going to tell him the full story anyways; there are some things he didn’t need to know about.
“Well,” Carla started, “”I came here about a month after the Disease took everyone, I had to leave because the foxes were starting to overrun Englin, I also had to deal with the problem of hundreds of dead bodies to bury and it was too depressing of work. I had to take care of myself a lot before the bombs anyways so it wasn’t hard at first. Then I ran out of canned food and it was terrible, I had no idea how to live off the land so I mostly ate vegetables raw. I wasn’t very healthy and then I came across a stroke of luck.”
Carla got up and opened one of the cupboards, she started to talk again, “I saw this book in one of the houses I was in and read every chapter, it might of saved my life.” What she pulled out was a book that had saved her, The Complete Wasteland Survival Guide by The Survival Guild. “I don’t know what the Survival Guild is but thank god they wrote this book. It deals with everything from where to find food, to identifying poisonous plants, to cleaning guns.”
The book itself was massive, it could have easily been a thousand pages, the cover was that of a red that looked to scarlet and the writing on the cover was that of deoxygenize blood, and the books most striking feature was the symbol it had on it, a rat skull with two survival knifes crossed between it.
“I know what was inside that book, lists of every eatable plant and how to spot ones that would kill you, tutorials on how to clean weapons and sharpen blades. It also contained tips on medical treatment but claiming that if you were seriously hurt you would be dead, the book also focused on improving yourself and seemed to be geared towards people surviving with no one left,” She explained, “basically this book has saved my life on more than one occasion. Everything and anything anyone would need to know about surviving in a wasteland by yourself could be found in this book, there was only one problem with the book: no author, just a short paragraph explaining what the survival guild was. I know that paragraph by heart now. ‘The survival guild is an organization that gathers knowledge on how to survive in the most extreme places and scenarios. The organization has been around since the 1800’s and has been dedicated to the preservation of sentient life. There are several locations around the world although none are accessible to the general public.’”
Carla finished reciting the paragraph to Dashed when she saw a look of panic and worry, and then she felt it. Her eyes rolled up to the top of her head and she passed out the last word she heard was dashed screaming, “CARLA!”
