Baloo & Kaa - Alternative Hypnosis
Dated 31/12/2011
Kaa might be well known throughout the jungle for his hypnotic techniques, but he soon discovers that a few hours in the company of Baloo's hot, tired feet can have an equally mesmerising effect.

For whatever reason, it's become a curious tradition of mine to try and submit a piece of art on New Years Eve - something which, with the exception of 2008, I have done every year since 2007. And I'm not about to stop now.
Following on from last week's Timon comic, I've been going through a bit of a Disney phase recently, trying my hand at replicating the style and drawing some of my favourite characters. With any luck there will be a few more examples to come, but for this year's final submission, I decided to go down The Jungle Book route.
Strictly speaking, I have depicted Baloo once before, though I didn't really make a good fist of it - some might remember my rather crude animation loop of Baloo stomping a mouse in December 2007, but given that only his foot was visible, you could be forgiven for not recognising the subject! Four years on therefore, I have made my first genuine attempt to draw the character. However, rather than throwing another generic animal in with him, I wanted to keep the picture within the world of the Jungle Book by choosing Kaa as his victim instead.
As with the Timon comic, I wanted to stay as faithful as possible to the original Disney styling. Thankfully Kaa is absurdly easy to draw, and Baloo wasn't too tricky either - though sadly I don't think I quite got the foreshortening effect right, hence his head looks rather small in proportion with the rest of his body! Still, the biggest challenge was the background; I had been fairly loose with the background on the Timon comic, but this time I was striving to create something that looked much more like a proper Disney animation cel, so I studied a few Jungle Book layouts before attempting to compile my own interpretation. Given how concerned I was that it wouldn't look right, I'm actually very happy with the results.
Anyway, that's it from me for 2011; a year which I'll be quite happy to see the back of given that I spent most of it unemployed - and that Ipswich Town were diabolically crap again throughout! Whilst I have severe doubts that you'll be seeing much artwork from me in 2012, I would like to thank everybody for your comments, favourites, shouts etc. over the past year and I wish you all the very best for the next 12 months.
Happy New Year, Everyone!

Why is it always the ones that don't want it, do get it? x3 Kaa gets baloo's foot to the face, and with the way you drew it, it looks hypnotically good *blush*. What a lucky snake Kaa is!
Job well done as always and your art always is improving with each and every drawing, Rex! Job well done to this year, Happy New Year, and look forward to seeing what you come up with in 2012!

Well I wouldn't criticise artists for depicting characters within their own stylistic interpretations. But I just wanted to try and stay faithful to the original Disney styling, even though it is rather different from my own. Still, glad it came out well.
Thanks very much!
Thanks very much!
This pic is so great... I think I like how Baloo's foot is pressed against Kaa's neck as much as how his foot is pressed against Kaa's face. ... Well, maybe not quite as much, but it's close. Also, I'm one of the few that prefer the "clean" version. *shrug* Both are simply incredible though!
So THAT'S how you train a snake! I better take the training first though to make sure it's okay. :3
I always liked Baloo, though as with many of Disney's characters, the footpaws were not well drawn. This is sort of a nice go-between to stay faithful to their style but still try to make the footpaws a little sexier. Good interpretation work there RRRex!
I hope at some point you or someone gives a whirl at trying a picture of Baloo with a break from the Disney style to give him more realistic/detailed bear feet. I'm sure Kaa would be thrilled. ;P

Heh - well thanks, TC! I'm not sure whether I'd do a more realistic version of Baloo - to me it would remove the essence of his character. But you never know; if the urge takes me.
Oh, and you can train pretty much anything this way if your feet are big enough!
Lol!

*laughs* I can just hear Baloo using that training line on a class while continuing to "train" Kaa. :P
As for Baloo's character, that depends on what you think defines his character. I think in terms of appearance, his general shape and that big tubby belly are his trademark. The footpaws looking the way they did was mostly a result of Disney animators being too lazy (or just not considering it important) to do really nice detailed feet. SO many of their works suffer from that problem. :/ Of course... that's also a catch 22 in that if they did take the time to make the footpaws awesome, then we'd be pained at how little camera time the nice paws would get. :P

Funnily enough, I would have to disagree with the simple paw design. Sometimes I actually find the basic, toony paws somewhat more appealing than the heavily detailed, realistic stuff. I think it's because it lends itself to a greater degree of imagination and personal perception, plus a simple cell-shaded cartoon paw has no blemishes!
Sometimes though, you're right - a bit of 'enhancement' adds some spice to the design.

Ooooooooh... I think I gave the wrong impression; I meant more realistic in the sense of just having more pronounced toes and less simple claws, not that it had to be ultra realistic. ^^; Cartoon style with cell shading definitely leaves more to the imagination and I love that. What I was referring to was that Disney didn't take the time to draw the individual toes and claws in detail, rather, they just drew a pointed sort of shape and drew in lines to show claws and imply toes. Sorry for the confusion!
I guess that comes down to personal preference too. For me personally, lack of detail just isn't attractive, hence Brian Griffin's feet suffer from the same sorta drawn-in-ten-seconds-look that many Disney characters have too. But that's just my personal tastes talking... and I'm old and choosy I guess.
I absolutely ADORE this piece! Time and time again i tend to Google or Youtube search Kaa imagery, and too much are the results really bad cuts from the movie or edits from other sources and never a true, newly drawn piece of original artwork that looks good.
I commend you for adding to the collection of art that is well needed of a boost.
There is so little 'true' art of Kaa, and this is a big surprise to me. You rock the paw! <3

Bear paws have ALWAYS been magic. Just look at all the BearPaw and BearClaw things:
- bear paw prints are in all the Native American & New Age stores
- The Bear Rock cafe features a HUGE yiffy bear pawPrint as their logo
- there are BearPaw brand Ugg boot clones with bear paws on the sole!
TaleSpin was a wonderful series that re-framed many of the Jungle Book characters
into a 20s? 30? art-deco world when aviation was still new.
Shere Kahn is the president/CEO of Kahn Industries
where his predatory instincts are applied to business practices. Terribly realistic, eh?
In the episode "The Incredible Shrinking Molly",
you'd love the scene where Molly (the little girl) shrinks to about an inch tall
and runs around Baloo's&* Kitt's bare feet!
If it were me, I'd LET THEM feel me with their paw-pads :">
But it's Wildcat's sweet feet that I adore the most!
So soft, puffy, sensitive and gentle.
