Even the book is a cameo. Wolfteller wanted to be in the story as a talking book, so I thought he'd make a good barter for the kidnapped Oracle. The book is smart enough not to let the person who tries to be the first one to take a hit in battle be the one to carry it. Also, Thwaitsey doesn't seem to like the adventurers very much, or maybe he's grumpy he couldn't go with. Or maybe he just hasn't had his coffee.
