I must state up front in my own defense that I would've landed on the hay bales if Rainbow Dash had not punted me off the roof!
Returning to my Equestria dreamscape. After several weeks of reading books. Balancing a ball on my wing tips and classroom lectures http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7066905 I got my first real flying lesson. Now I had done some of the pre-flight drills of jumping off objects like tables or stairs while flapping my wings to get an initial feel for what flight would feel like, but this was my first real flight lesson.
To avoid unnecessary gawkers and since they had plenty of open space on their property, Sweet Apples Acres was selected for flight training. Besides the Apple family had always wanted a deck on top of their place to enjoy the evening breezes in the summertime, so Celestia included the necessary materials for building it as part of the repair costs to their homestead which had been damaged during the fall of the Lord of Shadows http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6889618/. The bits then came out of the Canterlot Treasury.
Now Celestia just provided the funds for the deck. She did not provide the ponies to build it, and since its original purpose was for my benefit I got roped into helping build it. Once I no longer needed for flying lessons then a railing would be installed all around the edge of the deck, but for now it was just a big flat space for me to take off from.
So one bright, warm, early autumn morning I found myself perched on top of Sweet Apple Acres with Rainbow Dash and Petina. Carousel had business elsewhere that morning. Petina said she was there for moral support, but since I had to help lug a lounge couch and umbrella up there just for her I think her real motive was to get some sun bathing in.
Now I knew that flying was a natural thing for pegasus ponies and I had studied the subject with every spare moment I could make over the last few weeks, but still to be standing at the edge of that platform was another thing. Therefore I blame my less than stellar first performance on stage nerves and Rainbow's overly enthusiastic assistance. Still by the end of the day I had not met Rainbow's exacting, overly optimistic standards. Therefore Dash gave me the charming nickname of Brick.
For this posting I decided to lay out the art in an actual comic book page format. Instead of random sketches that I do in my sketchbook when I have a moment or two.

You'd think somepony would've thought to build one of [these] (and/or [these]) somewhere by now, right?
One of those could come in really useful here, I think...

I'll go beyond that -- the general impression is that Equestria's technology roughly compares to Europe's 19th century (1800s). Vertical wind tunnels weren't developed until the 1960s. Horizontal wind tunnels might be developed, but they've already got flying and don't have a lot of need to develop new flight technologies.
Secondly; uhh, wouldn't a fall like that, y'know, break a few bones or something?
The ponies are rather tough and strong in the show; Dash once leveled AJ's old barn by flying into it hard enough to make it explode. Heck, even Rarity managed to pull a load of jewels that three full grown Diamond Dogs had trouble moving.
So I think Baron would be sore, but not maimed or the like.

Kick? KICK?!? What was Dash thinking?
...
She put you completely out of position, not to mention causing you to tuck both legs and tail. How did she expect you to get any stability at all that way? <raspberry>
Ouch. That's like learning to swim by being thrown into the pool (repeatedly). I heard one person tell a story about a version of that so warped it bordered on attempted murder.
Petina... I don' think that's sun she's up there for. Otherwise she wouldn't have the umbrella up. (I bet she likes the view, though.)
Making this entry into a "proper comic page" was the right choice. It relies on a specific sequence, something comic pages do very well.

She later claimed she was just trying give an encouraging push and got carried away. Funny thing is I can almost buy that from Dash.

Fortunately it only happened once, and she eventually, eventually, apologize and admit that was not the best move on her part. So the rest of the lesson was without the kinetic distraction.

It seemed like the right thing for it.

Yeah, I can kind of see that, too. (I've been accused of kicking when someone came at me and I pushed them away with my feet.) Of course, my purpose of that lead-in was to set up a joke implying I was more concerned about your performance than getting kicked and falling off the barn -- and missing they hay.

I really love your stuff. The sheer creativity and detail has captivated me ever since I stumbled upon your work. I hope it's not rude of me to request some more general slice of life scenes from around Ponyville. Especially anything regarding that lovely Black and Tan.
Well all you'll be getting for awhile from Ponyville is slice of life since until recently that is all that has happened. Also there will be more Black and Tan since she is a resident of Ponyville, and Carousel, Petina and I visit the Bucking Mare on a routine basis now.
Sorry, guess I wasn't being clear. What I meant was the random ponies going about their day. Like the young mare listening to her brother play his harmonica, or Dark Roast pouring the next order. Those really got my imagination going as the reveal the subtle or maybe not so subtle nuances of the society you've accidentially ploppet into.
He already has! http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6814339/ was featured a while back.
Go figure that Baron's debut on EqD involved Celestia getting naked...
