Chapter 17
Dashed just sat there on the floor for another ten minutes just clutching his head and repeating the same things over and over again, none of it was making any sense to Carla, he just kept ranting about Olivia and Carla and how it was wrong and how she is still there and a whole ton of other unknowable stuff. Finally Carla snapped; she walked over to Dashed, slapped him across the face, held him by the collar of his shirt, stared into his eyes with the most anger expression a sentient being can make and growled, “You’re going to tell me what happened and you’re going to start making sense right now or I’m going to have myself a new fox fur coat for the winter. Understand?” As she said this a huge crack of thunder ripped across the sky and seemed to add to the menace.
Dashed slowly nodded and apologized, “ok, I’m sorry I guess I’m having a hard time coming to terms with what happened.”
Carla let Dashed go; he slumped to the floor, seemingly relived of being back in control, he walked over to the living room and sat down on the chair that was near the training weights. He opened his mouth as to say something but closed it, he looked all around the room as if he was confused. He looked at Carla, then he looked out the window that was across the room, then back to Carla, then out the window, Carla, window, Carla, window. Then all of a sudden he picked up a ten pound weight and threw it at the window. The window didn’t shatter as Carla expected it to, she also wasn’t fazed by Dashed’s actions she leapt to grab him, but he was too fast for her he leapt at the window and broke through in a shower of glass shards. Dashed landed on the ground and rolled to his feet, he looked back at Carla how was standing on the other side of the broken window and shot her a look of apology. Carla watched Dashed run towards the woods in the pouring rain, “Probably to work out whatever madness he caught while I was out,” she thought.
She spent the next half hour boarding up the window, when she was down she sat down on the couch with a sigh. Carla then got up and started to make herself some tea. After a nice warm cup She looked over and saw Dashed’s backpack, considering everything that just happened she didn’t think it would be that rude to go through his stuff. She opened it and went through everything, she was surprised at the stuff she found: first aid, only three different outfits, a rolled up sleeping mat, and several cans of food to only name a few. At the very bottom she found a journal, she put it on the table and sat down. She stared at it arguing with herself on whether or not she should open it or not. Finally she decided, “Fuck it.” and opened the first page. Three hours later she was still gripped in his story, all the near deaths experiences he had, the voices that he hears and seems to forget about, his growing madness and most shocking was his latest entries, this is what it read,
“Carla is still passed out after a full day; I don’t know what is wrong with her, she seemed to have just fainted and I can’t find out how to wake her up. I tried giving her some water and food but she was unresponsive. Anyways Olivia and I have been holding up here real well and it seems to me that everything is going fine for right now.”
Carla kept reading to the next day,
“Olivia ran off today, I followed her into the woods. She was in a large clearing in the woods as if she was waiting for me. When I got closed I saw a strange blue figure rise out of the back, at first I couldn’t tell what it was but I soon began to realize that it was my dead girlfriend Olivia. She was as beautiful as ever and in the best dress I had ever seen. She gave me a message, she said to, “let go and love those around me” and then she faded to nothingness. I checked the feral fox’s heartbeat and I couldn’t hear anything, she was dead. I don’t know what to do anymore, Olivia has left me and Carla is in a coma. I guess if she doesn’t wake up tomorrow she will die of dehydration anyways and I’ll just need to move on and continue to move to Canada.”
