This is the first chapter of a spin-off story that I originally started on deviantART. I will post the first four chapters over the course of the next four days, and then it will update regularly along with my deviantART account.
Enjoy the story of Phylum!
Edit: I can't seem to do anything about the boxes where the quotation marks should be. Anyone help me out?

How to fix the quotation marks:
1) Download a text editor (not a word processor) like Textpad or Notepad++. The standard Windows Notepad may work, but it'll take a lot longer due to its lack of a find and replace function. To find the other things I mentioned, just search for them.
2) Open up your story text and highlight one of the quotation marks-- let's start with the opening one-- and copy it to the clipboard. (Control+C)
3) Go to the find and replace thing. It should be under the edit, view, or search menus, depending on what program you're running. Paste the mark you copied into the "find" box (Control+V) and type the same mark in the "replace with" box. If done properly, the quotation mark in the "replace with" box should appear directly vertical, rather than adjusted to either side.
4) Hit "Replace all". This should remove the unwanted marks and replace them with the wanted ones. Repeat this for the other end of the quotation.
5) Save, exit, and post.
What causes this issue is a difference in text encoding-- The default text encoding for FurAffinity doesn't support opening and closing quotation marks, only the position-neutral one. The web browser doesn't know how to handle this and uses the wrong text encoding method, garbling the quotes. Incidentally, if you happen to see this on someone else's writing, you could probably work around it by manually overriding the character encoding. (In Firefox, it's under the view menu. Switch it from Unicode to Western.)
I hope I could be of service.
