When I was tiny I remember being told this by, I think, my grandma...
It's weird as heck really x3
I think it's called "White Snake"
A servant in the king's castle has served for many years.
One day a box arrives for the king who disguards it. -Before disposing of it the servant opens the box and peers inside.
There is a white snake inside who smiles and bites the servant's hand. -Once he has the snake explains that the servant can now understand all animals.
Having been asked to dispose of the king's gift he sets the snake free.
A little while later the queen's gold ring has dissapeared and, as the only one but the king and queen to have access to it, the servant is accused of having stolen the ring.
He's told he has one day to prove his innocence. After the day is done he is thrown in jail where he then hears a duck complaining about the ring she accidentally swallowed being stuck in her neck.
The servant says he has proof and, taking the duck to the king, they recover the ring and the king offers land and riches in apology.
The servant says all he wants is a little money and a horse so he can see the Kingdom.
He's not gone very far when he finds some fish stuck on the beach and crying for help. Her carefully places them back in the water.
They call, "Thank you! We will remember this!" and swim away.
He's not gone much further when he finds a group of ants about to be trodden on. He saves the ants, taking them home.
They and their king call, "Thank you! We will remember this!" and dissapear underground.
A little way along the path he hears the cries of children. His friend, the horse, tells him they are Raven chicks who's nest has fallen to the floor. He rescues them and replaces them in their tree.
They and their mother thank him saying, "Thank you! We will remember this!"
When the servant reaches the town he hears that the king has said anyone who succeeds in 3 tasks, one his daughter's and two his, shall be married to her but if they fail they will die.
The servant agrees and the king throws the wedding ring into the sea.
"Recover the ring, drown trying or die for failure!" he proclaims.
As soon as he has finished talking, a fish appears on the beach and gives the servant the ring.
The king is amazed and spills a bag of grain.
"I shall know if any grain is missing! Refil this bag with the grain, die trying or die for failiure!"
Before the servant even tries to start the ant king and his workers refil the sack with every single grain.
The king is amazed again and asks his daughter for the third challege.
"Bring me the apple of the tree of life so we may live together forever"
The servant wanders for weeks until he finally slumps at the base of another fruitless tree when into his lap falls an apple from the tree of life.
Above in the branches are the ravens he rescued as chicks, grown now and having taken an apple for him.
He and the princess are married and share the apple, living happily ever after with the ravens in the tower, the ants down below and the fish in the stream.
I think it's a Brother's Grimm thing so it's probably a lot more gruesome in most incarnations but that's the one I was told as a child. :3
