You really don't look that bad in your new photo, though we don't have as clear a view of your torso to compare with the old one. That said...yeah, the old look is very nice. For those who like a more "slick" look...well, that delightful wild hair could be made more professionally acceptable (in some settings) by pulling it back once it's long enough to do so. Of course, that'll still leave a few months of getting shaggy. I know what you mean about taking a while to grow a good beard, too. The guys with black hair generally don't know how easy they have it.
On losing weight: Unfortunately, changing your eating pattern and/or getting more exercise is really the best way to do that. Trust me, as a somewhat lazy guy who loves food, I know it's not as easy as a lot of people make it sound. The key is making the changes in your lifestyle small, gradual improvements, with the idea that smaller changes are easier to maintain, but that the little successes will add up to a larger goal. For example, you don't have to lose the weight fast, as long as you lose it. Actually, losing weight TOO fast is unhealthy. So, here are a some ideas:
1.) You don't have to DIET, per se, but try eating healthier. If you've GOT to munch on something, swap out the chips or popcorn for fruits and vegetables. For example, it's amazing how munchable mini-carrots can be, provided you like carrots.
2.) Cut sodas from your diet whenever possible. At 150+ calories per can (more for bottles), soda will pack the weight on in no time.
3.) Try to minimize between-meal snacks.
4.) If you eat whatever food is in front of you...well, try not to have food in front of you all of the time! Don't keep lots of snack food or sweets around to tempt you. If it's not there, you can't eat it! That may mean just not having it in your cupboard at all, so that temptation isn't even an option.
On exercise: If you can't leave the house to exercise, exercise at home. Do stretches, leg lifts, improvise weights or buy a small set of free weights that you can practice with in your room. Since you want to be trimmer, repetitions will be more important than the weight, so you really wouldn't need to buy anything beyond 15 or 20 lbs. There are always floor exercises like leg-lifts, toe-touches, crunches, and push-ups (and yes, modified push-ups count!) If you can find a way to do some cardiovascular exercise, that's absolutely the best for burning calories/fat. That would be things like jumping jacks, running around the house (I used to do laps around the den as a kid), going up and down stairs, or spending time on a stationary bike.
The big ingredients, of course, are willpower and desire: you've got to want to improve your physical condition badly enough to be willing to make and stick to whatever lifestyle changes you pick out.
