'Unconditional' is now available for pre-order, right here: http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=594
Now mind you, none of these orders will be shipping until the end of June. But if you put in your order now, you're guaranteed a copy :)
The printed version of Unconditional includes the entire story, in color, as well as five pages that will not be posted online. These pages include a few adult scenes, but mostly, they are an epilogue to Marcus and Reis's story.
Note: If you order one of these books online, you will NOT be able to pick up your copy at Anthrocon, unless you're purchasing a separate copy. Just wanna make that clear. This is NOT a pre-order for Anthrocon pickup!
It's also worth mentioning, we will likely not have many copies at AC this year, due to the amount of time it takes to print. I'm sure Furplanet will bring as many as they can, but if you ABSOLUTELY want to nab a copy at AC, be prepared to be in the Dealer's Den Friday morning, first thing, or you may miss out.
Sorry for the slight delay. I wanted to post the entirety of this conversation in one day, seeing as it's a very pivotal talk between the two of them.
This comic is a sequel! The first comic, 'Cruelty', can be read here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3704554/
Posting this disclaimer on every page, so no one can say they didn't see it. No need to read it if you already have, it's just for newcomers:
- This comic will contain adult content, swearing, violence, death, and some very difficult political and social subject matter. If you're the sort of sensitive person who can't handle that, this comic is not for you.
- Not ALL of the content in this comic will be posted online. I'll be withholding one of the adult scenes from the online release, reserved for the eventual print release. HOWEVER. Just like 'Cruelty', this comic WILL have one full adult scene posted online. Any complaints about the withheld content will be ignored, and likely scorned by the folks who DO enjoy what's posted online. So don't be an ass.
- This comic is GAY. GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY! I cannot express this ENOUGH, seeing as there was some confusion with 'Cruelty'. This comic follows the storyline of 'Cruelty' regardless of which 'path' you took, but it is assumed the characters eventually began a relationship. The comic deals with gay issues, as well as a gay relationship. Deal with it, or GTFO.

There are probably other, better intances earlier in the comic that you could figure that one out. Check out the first few pages where the two of them are waking up the bed and Marcus tries to coax him to not go to work, for example. Whether Marcus is doing this consciously or subconsciously could be up for interpretation.
I see more of a break-up and then they need time on there own to figure some things out, and one of them need time to grow-up and not always make things about Him..MARC! . I hope Reis makes him feel bad for a while about why all of this happened. Some people need to feel bad for a while, not give them a quick "everything is ok and I forgive you so don't feel bad and lets have tons of sex" out. Make them reflect and work to get back into there good graces. SUFFER I TELL YOU...SUFFER!
true but in this point in time i think its just more then that. Not only did Reis have a horrible accident but Marc feels souly responsible, so his caring for him may have gone from (Im taking care of you cause I love) to (I did something horrible to you and I must make up for it at all cost) Rise could be needing to get away not just for his sake but for Marc's as well.
Love this so much. I'm halfway surprised that Reis didn't ask Marcus to come with him--not because he expected Marcus to say yes, but because he knew Marcus would say No.
I'm seriously rooting for Reis over Marcus at this point--he's been through so much recently and still wants to stand on his own instead of falling into complacency. I'm curious to see which one will miss the other more.

I think the issue here is not so much about caring and helping, I think that to Reis, it is more about his independence and self-respect.
If he stays with Marc and drops the job offer from earlier, he risks depending on him for everything. And Marc could just threaten to cut him off in order to get what he wants.
Whereas if he goes back to his home for that job, he can pay his own way and approach Marc on an equal level, not being what amounts to a slave to Marc. He's been there with the drugs, so he knows how bad it is.

You have to remember though that Marcus is an extreme kind of guy. Remember not too long ago when he'd go from angry to yiffy at the drop of a dime? Sometimes with extreme people it takes extreme actions to actually get their attention. This is something that had been building for some time, and it eventually reached a breaking point...and one that was not easy for Reis to come to, given the fact that he hadn't eaten anything in three days.
So? If Shadow did what Marcus did, in exactly the same way, and I got hit because of it, I'd be willing to forgive him. I'd be upset I had to take a car to the face, but I'd still be willing to forgive it.
And what do you mean by "I never said I wanted this to happen"? o.O I don't remember directing my comment at you, so that's kind of confusing...
And what do you mean by "I never said I wanted this to happen"? o.O I don't remember directing my comment at you, so that's kind of confusing...
That's it Reis, put that little selfish prick in his place. Sometimes people need to feel bad for a while before you can forgive them, or they want learn anything. Make him work for your forgiveness, just don't give it back so easily with makeup sex, feeling bad and being sorry, because if you do, Marc will always know that and use it as a go-to move. When someone like Marc makes a problem like this one, he needs to suffer and reflect on it. Putting someone life in danger at his job, while your out and about, and having to save you from being so dumb to watch where your going and almost ends up dead because of it.....you might need to think about someone other then yourself and what you want.
For a good while i think, but you have to be careful about how long or how much, cause then the power can shift to there favor, and they can use there suffering to make you look like the Jerk and make you feel bad about making them feel upset. its a fine line you have to walk to keep the balance of power in hands and lord it over the other person. I know it sounds very mean, but that's the games people play with each other to control a relationship. Call me a jerk if you want, but there is a tinge of truth to what i say.
Or they're being practical. Not every relationship that starts nice lasts too long for whatever reason. There's just too much there right now and Reis is doing the right thing. They need time apart because of it. Though it's interesting to see how involved others get in having some emotion to characters. Personally I like the fact it feels more realistic simply by the fact it's not an instant all is forgiven type thing. Reality is never that forgiving for it to last long.
It might be partly mixed, Marcus might feel the need to control the situation, but it's more out of concern than a control-freak thing, but on the back end Reis probably is too prideful to have been seen in a situation like that I think that's his major problem. Reis doesn't want to be seen as weak and winding up in a hospital probably didn't really help the situation, so he's taking it out on Marcus. That's how I see it at any rate. I'm glad to see that Reis is well again though
I broke up with my BF for pretty much the same reason... it's hard, and I can relate to both characters. Reis needs to make something of himself while Marc might feel more comfortable in control of situations that could spiral out of control. The more a person needs to be in control of something the less in control they feel... I'd say that probably scares Marc, having something going on and being able to do NOTHING about it. Ultimately, this clash is what can happen and I'm *very* happy that you didn't resort to drama and theatrics... this is more like how it tends to be :/
Sadly, I'm a Marcus. I thrive on taking care of my mate. Making sure he's okay, that his needs are met, that he has whatever games or things he wants. It pleases me to make him happy, and I feel as if it's my responsibility to. I'm not nearly as controlling, but that's because my mate had enough, flipped out, and told me to ease off. Turns out, he felt as if I was mothering him (i had just moved away from home, where I used to take care of my 7yr old sister, so that was probably true) and he didn't want to depend on me. Here we are, three years later and happy as can be. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to argue...how else are you supposed to really know how each other feels?
It got to where I couldn't trust him to be smart when he was out drinking with buddies, and that's when he snapped. He's a grown man and doesn't need someone telling him how to behave.
I can totally see both sides of this problem...and there's only two ways it can be solved...

^-^; Reis is so much more patient than me; Marcus is that type of person/mate that drives me up a wall. I guess I can understand Reis here more than Marcus. I myself and a fiercely independent person. To the point where I can come across as un-affectionate. ^-^ Enjoying the comic so far, hope to read more Rukis.
Its sad but it is a possibility they might separate. I mean before Marc was motivated, taking on challenges, getting ready for college, and being well responsible. Now he isn't. He talked about Reis not needing to work that they could live off his trust, not listening to Marc very often. He has become very self centered and irresponsible and trying to drag Reis with him. I am not surprised Reis is upset. Reis wants to make something of himself, He had a hard life and he wants to make it better. When he was offered a chance at that Marc didn't seem very happy about it.
Kind of makes me wonder what happened to Reis to make him turn out like this. Though many do seem to get lazy or unmotivated or such after they leave home because they feel they have freedom and they dont really need to worry about anything.

I totally know how Reis feels. Smothering someone can really be a bit of a pain; so can constant apologizing, which makes you feel cruddy then the anger builds up. He just needs some space without someone feeling so overprotective or a doting parental figure.
So Reis is not being a dick
So Reis is not being a dick
And yeah, I know how it feels when someone is like Marc, trying to make you feel better when you are down constantly by being there (which isn't all together bad, but sometimes the person wants to be alone) or apologizing too much (gets annoying after a while, trust me, it's happened to me before).
I can't say I didn't see it coming, I don't like it but I saw it coming. Maybe this will be a learning experience for Marc.
I can't say I didn't see it coming, I don't like it but I saw it coming. Maybe this will be a learning experience for Marc.
Yep, saw this coming a mile away. Reis wants to establish himself and not be a kept person. He loves Marcus very much and you can see it in his attitude. But he also doesn't need to be smothered. Makes me wonder what skeletons are in Marcus's closet that makes him that clingy.
Oh, I know. I've gone through bouts of not eating much during periods of depression/physical trauma/drug withdrawal myself, but clearly Reis isn't in a position to take care of himself at the point in time depicted. All Marcus is doing is trying to get him to do something healthy because he cares and is worried.
He's not going to be in a position to take care of himself after he leaves either. His mom just died, he just got hit by a car, he's having relationship issues and depression with the state of his life, police academy training is going to be damn stressful, and he's just had a taste of the dope again. It's like a perfect storm of relapse triggers. Dimes to donuts says he leaves for Mayfield and then gets right back on the pills again.
He doesn't know what he's getting himself into. He's about to turn his entire life upside-down (and Marcus's by proxy) and undertake a pretty difficult course of vocational study while living alone in a house that will constantly remind him of his prior drug use and the fact that his mother is gone.
What happens when Marcus isn't there to provide his currently-unstable emotions with an anchor? What happens if this affects his performance in the academy and he starts to fail and then loses even more respect for himself? He's setting himself up and doesn't realize it.
Why does he have to become a police officer in Mayfield, just because it was offered to him? He just inherited a house. He could flip that and everything in it for market value and have more than enough money to pay for a four-year degree from a community college in whatever course of study he could want to take, all without having to move. He wouldn't have to work because of Marc's trust fund. There are a million other opportunities out there waiting for him if he would just stop being a shithead.
But noooo. He has to become a cop because...MARCUS IS SUCH A SELFISH JERK OMG WHAT DOES REIS SEE IN HIM!?!?

I wasn't addressing you specifically, Mr. Gabbagabbahey. Just ranting in general and speculating, based on my own experiences with drugs. When you're on something addictive and you quit it and move to a new place, it's a fair bit easier to stay clean off of it, but once you hit home, but little things that remind you of when you used to use can trigger some pretty immense cravings. I got off of spice and moved to New Orleans and never had a drug problem after that (just smoking weed once or twice a week), but I went home to visit my family and just being in my old bedroom made me feel all kinds of old urges.
Oxycodone is much more profoundly addictive than spice, and Reis will likely be encountering far more triggers for a much longer period of time than I did. I don't know what's going to happen and I could very well be wrong, but this is what I am predicting as the most likely scenario.

Oh, I know something has to change, but I'm saying he doesn't really have to move back to BFE and become a cop to find direction. Like I said, he's sitting on a now-empty house and has virtually no living expenses, and could easily just stay on the coast and go the fuck to college if he wanted. He's being amazingly short-sighted by thinking that his options are limited to "small-town cop" or "house-husband."
Plus, aren't the people that used to bully Marcus back in Mayfield? The ones that now know Reis is in a relationship with him? Watch him run into them at some point. One crack about Marcus not being there because the AIDS finally got him, and it's right back to jail on assault charges for Reis. Everything in the world could go wrong with this.

It depends. A big university will break the bank once all's said and done, but a degree from one is necessary (albeit not guaranteed) to get a really good job and achieve the so-called "American dream," which is why so many people take out student loans with hideous interest rates that keep them paying the bank back well over what they borrowed for decades. Y'all have it lucky over there, although it chafes me a bit to see student strikes and such over minor tuition hikes when you guys get to go to school for super cheap to begin with.
However, America has a lot of small community colleges that are state-subsidized. Some are so small they only offer two-year Associates degree programs, although many offer four-year programs as well. These colleges also often don't have dormitories because they cater to people who live in the area surrounding them. All that's necessary to get into one is a few thousand dollars a semester and a high school diploma or GED. Reis could absolutely afford this several times over, even if the house is cruddy and he doesn't get much for it. Marcus is an excellent student, so he could and would help him study and keep at it and get, at the very least an Associate's degree, which would be an enormous source of pride for him, all without having to leave Marcus's side.
But, like a the dog he is, he's hungry now and thus more apt to accept the bone he's been thrown rather than dive into the pile of fresh-cooked pesto-glazed rotisserie chickens around the corner.

Called it many many pages ago but called it.
They need time apart to fix things and this was exactly what was going to come up. Because like any real life counterpart when there's issues this deep, a simple thing as taking care of one is not always the best solution. Reis was trying to do something more that in a way so he didn't need to be taken care of. The wake up call was that accident. It's just like anyone else that is pushed so far one direction or the next.
If they end up together again its going to be obviously more on terms if Reis is stronger with himself. This might be that whole eye opener for Marcus more than the whole trying to take care of someone thing. This needs to happen so he can see what he needs to. I'm pretty impressed with the story in how the characters do have depth, all of which makes it a good read and view.

I figured this conversation was coming and I'm glad it has arrived. Marcus needs a slap in the face. I know he loves Reis and means well, but he's definitely started to take his boyfriend's neediness for granted. Also, he's a hypocrite who went from "I'm going to out you in front of your coworkers because you should be proud to be gay" to "You can't be a cop because you're gay." It is a necessary evil that Reis cause Marcus some hurt, because hurt heals.
Somehow I understand both boys here.
I love to take care of my friends and stick with them even in difficult situations. But on the other hand, if something bad happens to me I'm more like Reis. This "sorry, I need to vanish for a while and sort things out in my head".
Difficult, for both of them.

There Is a certain amount of Control that Marc is exerting, and i really fear that If / When Reis goes home to pursue his individuality and his one live / sens of self worth - Marc is going out with that D-bag guy.. For some reason i have that feeling...
I really hope I am wrong.
I really hope I am wrong.
Reis is a proud guy, look at him he's a big ole wolf. Society imprints in males a need to be the provider or at the very least to be self sufficient. The fact that he can't do that with the way things are right now, is making him lash out at Marcus. It's easier to say that Marcus is smothering him, or to accuse Marcus of needing someone to smother, than to admit that he doesn't like being the dependent in the relationship. I'm sure it doesn't help that Marcus is a small openly homosexual, where Reis is both larger and still seemingly ashamed of being gay... or at least afraid of how people will react to it.
I've really been bugged by how the mob of comments seems to swing back and forth between hating Marcus or Reis, and blaming them for everything. They're both people, no more or less deeply flawed than the rest of us. Rukis has really captured the realness of being in a relationship, which isn't easy... especially in a comic format which isn't usually conductive to deep character development.
Seriously though, get off Marcus' case. He's an extrovert, he's a political activist, and he like everyone else wants to keep the status-quo which means supporting Reis and working the better job while going to school at the same time... really he's a damn hero. Reis is a recovering drug addict who nearly killed someone, worked a dead end job because his life has not nearly been as fair to him, believes that his sexual orientation shouldn't been anyone else's business so doesn't like broadcasting it, and is too proud to let someone else take care of him because society says all men need to be self sufficient or the provider. Would it do Marcus some good to realize that Reis' pride is badly wounded right now? Yes. Could Reis get off his high horse and accept that maybe his pride isn't worth being alone, and there are plenty of ways to get back on your feet without moving across the country? Yes.

Marcus isn't working, he's a trust fund baby. Like Paris Hilton.
And Reis doesn't like being doted on. His self-worth is tied to his independence and ability to contribute to the relationship. This isn't a societal pressure, or pride, it's a personal pressure. I, a female, couldn't be a dependent either. I want to contribute, and it hurts me when I can't.
I think Reis going home and training to be a cop will be good for him, and for Marcus. The time apart will let them both get perspective, and when Reis has a marketable skill, ie being a cop, he can get a job where Marcus is and things will be better. As long as they learn to communicate better in that time. xD

No, Marcus is nothing like Paris Hilton. For one Marcus is going to school, he's intelligent, and doing very well. He's going to make something of his self and it's not been handed to him! While Paris Hilton has never done anything much ever... Everything has been given to her! She's never had to work physically or mentality ever.
Fair point, I'd forgotten he was independently wealthy.
From my own life I had to stick it out and swallow my pride. After a serious car accident destroyed my spine I suddenly found myself being stuck at home while my wife worked to support us. Prior to that I loved being spoiled by her, but it became a large point of contention after. So I understand perfectly where Reis is coming from. The difference is that I accepted the change and instead of becoming angry and bitter about it, I chose to make the best of it and become the home-maker. I started learning how to cook like an English TV chef, and took at home college courses. I didn't decide that my wife was trying to smother me, lash out at her, and then decide to move far far away and restart my life.

Yes, but if your partner is basically boxing you into a corner, you have a right to be a upset.
And it's Reis' choice if he wants to go and join the police force. Not Marcus'. Even in a marriage, you understand that your partner has a right to their autonomy (ESPECIALLY if they're unhappy with the current situation). If my husband wanted to quit the air force and go do something else, I would support it. Even if it meant we would be apart for awhile, or if I didn't like the job.
For a couple to be happy, both partners must be happy. And right now Reis is not happy.

It's been too long since I've seen it. Never really cared for it, not my kind of humor.
But I was pretty sure she was competent as a lawyer, and got into the school because her father is an alumni (and went because her boyfriend was going, and she didn't want to break up). Might be wrong. Doesn't really matter. xD
NEways, we can only hope that you can't sleep your way to the top in this day and age.

In Reis case I wouldn’t call it pride (SUPERBIA) it more about his dignity (DIGNITAS). In Latin it is almost the same, but pride is a major flaw and dignity a stoic virtue.
And there is nothing more dangerous than a man’s broken Dignitas! Just ask Tiberius Gracchus. Okay maybe a man’s broken heart. But as you said his manliness (VIRTUS) is broken as well. So I think Marcus should see that fact. I mean he should see that in the hospital and say to Reis that after this he (M.) will let him (R.) g. At least out of guilt, he should do it.
If somebody is too pride it is Marcus. Because he need Reis more than he want to admit. Okay in Cruelty he does. He said he wants Reis at his side and he said that he doesn’t care if there are friends or lovers as long there are together. And that Marcus real problem with Reis job opportunity was that they couldn’t stay together anymore, so he says things he not really believed in.
And Reis needs to be alone right now, just to know how much he miss/love Marcus or if his mother was right all the time.

You make some great points, I personally find them both to be at fault for not saying what they mean and not taking the time to see things from the others eyes. Though the recent rabble you hear in the comments section is biased against Marcus, so I found the need to take up primarily in his defense. I suppose it's too easy to feel sorry for Reis the big sad wolf, who just lost his mother... and was hit by a car. Reis has the tragic hero card to play right now, but I feel he's not thinking straight, he's reacting not planning. Why are people so down on the character who actually has a plan?
That and the only reason Reis isn't serving time in a state penitentiary right now is because Marcus sold his car, got a lawyer, and did everything in his power to keep that from happening. The people bashing Marcus seem convinced that Reis, who was raised in a neglectful drug-riddled environment, would be CEO of Northcote Industries right now if not for Marcus smothering him, when his past and present behavior indicate that he'd be on the street. Reis is basically a manchild and resents that about himself, but he projects that onto Marcus and I think that perhaps readers who identify with him do the same because they too are manchildren and thus more able to view themselves in Reis's shoes (or perpetual lack thereof).
Of cause they both have their flaws but now it’s time that Marcus learn something from it. I love Marcus, all the things he had done for Reis and they were not selfish. Not even Pollux would done more. And I feel sorry for him, because he loves Reis so much, so much that he can’t let him go even he know he must. I think Reis planning this well through, except the part that Marcus isn’t that strong and Reis is his Achilles’ heel and this will lead to a tragedy -> Mcguffin Part of FERAL and the priest.
I am very concerned about Marcus health if Reis leave him, but I am also concerned about Reis health if he stays. And now they both are selfish, Marcus like always and Reis for the first time.

I think that the "jump" between this page and the previous one is not that confusing! and I do not think the artist did this because the amount of time each page require, as someone said, because everything is well carefully planned and the amount of details, to my eyes, never got lower! (but I may be wrong, maybe is just a schedule matter :P) in my opinion, the events between these pages are really deductible, and it's good to left some imagination to the reader! when this page appeared on my screen, expecially the first panel, it left me breathless, the sadness is tangible, and the fact it is without speech-bubble give you the time to stare in his (Reis) emotional eyes, making you think all the things that have occurred till now.
oh and I love the coloration of this comic. colors became brighter or darker based on the situation and the colors here, perfectly fits with the atmosphere! OGM I LOVE THIS COMIC SO MUCH!!!
about Reis reaction: I think he already had the intention to leave, at least for a while, BEFORE the incident, because the fact that he would have accepted the new job, he knew that that mean live distant from each other ( I don't think marcus would have moved with him, not now that he's getting his degree)
Marcus is very intelligent, is going to get his bachelor one year earlier and his family is wealth. because of this, Reis, with "only" is GED, feels a bit useless and has the urge to make himself usefull going to work even if it is not necessary, because he wants to do his part, because he doesn't want to depend exlusively on Marcus. on the other side, Marcus feels like his mate shouldn't worry about all these things, because he can take care of all ( and maybe because he is A BIT proud, huh? ). not that Reis lacks of pride...

He's leaning against the wall, which is not necessarily standing. Plus, Doc Bunny (Ravi?) said a 'likely' torn ACL in the knee. We haven't had a solid diagnosis about exactly how bad his injuries were, but it looks like things weren't as bad as folks thought in previous pages.
What really got me about this page is that it hit way too close to home (I'm female and it was my male fiance, so not all struggles are shared). However, the words Reis is saying to Marcus (ironically my ex's name) ring way too familiar in my ears...and then the next page. I have tears running down my face, which just means once again Rukis, you have succeeded in creating a story and characters that seem real, not just drawings on a screen.
These 'jumps' in between pages aren't that bad, and are quite common. There's a lot to cover in a 65-page comic, and each page has to get right to it. Rukis laid down the framework in the last page, just be a true reader and fill in the blanks with your imagination.
And is it me or does Res look just a lil cuter with a notched right ear?
Oh, and foreshadowed breakup in 5... 4... 3... 2...
