The very short explanation is. . . this is the cover to 'Unconditional', the sequel to Cruelty.
I've started posting the comic now! You can start reading it here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7021452/
The full disclosure's below.
In early April 2010, I premiered my first anthropomorphic comic, 'Cruelty' (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3704554), here on FA. By now, at lot of y'all have read it. It was originally intentioned to be a short, one-shot comic, for the sake of practice, and critique. But as time went by, I grew more and more attached to the characters, and what was meant to be a small comic evolved into a 43 page graphic novel. It proved to be a wonderful experience for me, as I learned how to put together a comic, and got to know more and more of this community. I'm grateful to this day for the outpouring of support from you guys. I've always wanted to do comics for a living, but it wasn't until 'Cruelty' that I felt I might honestly be capable. I've still got a LONG way to go, but I wouldn't even be capable of pursuing this as a career if it weren't for this community. Thank you guys.
After Cruelty ended in July 2010, I issued the following statement on the final page:
I appreciate all the enthusiasm and the love for the Cruelty characters, and trust me. . . I won't forget about them. But I would have to be SERIOUSLY convinced to do a sequel. Feel free to argue your case. I'm going to give the comic a year to sit, and cool off. If after a year or so's gone by, and I'm STILL getting a lot of interest in the idea, or if enough of you can make a good argument for it. . . I'll consider it. If I ever did, I'd want to do it in color. I think at the very least, that'd separate it some from this one. Like, the 'adult years'. . . as opposed to the more juvenile art/shading.
As of this month, it's been a year. And I've been under a *deluge* of requests for some form of continuation since the comic ended last year. This was a very, very difficult decision for me, especially considering I now have another ongoing comic to work on. I've gotten a number of very convincing arguments from folks here on FA as to why the story should be continued, the most obvious of which being, a lot of things were left unanswered or unfinished in the previous story. But I decided a long time ago that if I was going to do a sequel, I would need to be serious with the script for it, and it would need to add to, not simply continue, the first story. After a few months of furious writing and consideration, I've a script I hope honors the first.
ALL of that being said, if you were happy with the initial comic, it remains a stand-alone story. 'Unconditional' continues 'Cruelty' approximately two and a half years after the end of Marcus and Reis's senior year in high school. It can follow either 'branch' of the storyline, although it does assume that at some point, the two characters entered into a romantic relationship.
Unconditional will be in pre-production for the next few months, while I finish my commission roster, and continue to work on Red Lantern. When Red Lantern volume 1 is complete in November, I'll begin posting pages of Unconditional. So for now, y'all will have to be patient :) I'll post a teaser image every now and then, and the occasional piece of pre-production work.
The comic will be approximately 80 pages, in full color. Its' current publication deadline is set at Anthrocon 2012, but that could potentially change, depending on my other work.
If anyone has any questions, as always, feel free to ask. And thank you all again, for watching and reading!

I too intended to purchase the first one, but kept forgetting and/or putting it off due to funds. After seeing Rukis's update, I just went and ordered it on furplanet less than 10 minutes ago ( http://furplanet.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=465 ), granted there's a rolling postal strike here in Canada, so it may get delayed awhile, unless the strike is over by time it gets past customs... :)
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXD I have no words to describe how I feel at this news! this is just....OMG!!! I hope this will have a happy ending to it and the unanswered questions will you know be answered. I have a feeling that firemen's hat has some roll in the story, but for me I just really hope this story has a happy ending :3
This announcement makes me happy. I thoroughly enjoyed "Cruelty", and the follow-up short series "Priorities". You have a way with characters and emotion that feels very real, which , as a fledging author, I admire. Unconditional will no doubt be a superb showing of both art and storytelling, and I'm already waiting eagerly for it's arrival. A new locale, Marcus in college, and Reis...well...where he ended up in life has me really interested. He was kind of a mess emotionally last we saw him. I'm intrigued that he's holding what appears to be a firefighters helmet in his hand. Certainly a pretty big turnaround from the path he nearly went down, if that is indeed his current occupation.
And, given the naming of the stories of these two so far, the title here, "Unconditional" has me pondering the plot. I'm just plain interested in seeing what's happened to these two after all that time, and where their lives are now, and what challenges they'll face. Thanks for giving me something to really look forward too.

Rukis made a continuation story titled "Priorities", which was literative instead of comic that takes place shortly after the events of Cruelty. She seperated it into three parts, the first of which can be found here. Barring an illustration between parts two and three (depicing a scene from the story), all three parts are next to each other. If you enjoyed "Cruelty", I highly recommend reading it.
I was watching Rukis at the time it first came out so I saw it then. As for when you asked, being that it was a while ago, I went to the site's Search feature and typed in "Rukis Priorities", and it was in the first few results. I honestly don't know if it's in scraps or not (may very well be), but as it's three years old, I was certainly not going to search for it manually.
I knew eventually you'll have to make sequel of Cruelty:3 The story to Cruelty is just too awesome to leave some questions not answered. I cannot wait to see the relationship of the characters, Marcus and Reis build further X3 I just like the side stories that you have typed of Reis and his mother. I felt sorry for Reis. Are you going to be adding those side stories that you have typed to the sequel?
I thought it was a construction hat myself. Now now that you mention it, it does sort of look like a firefighter's hat. For a gay man, that's gotta be a tough job. Not that I'm saying Reis can't handle the jobitself, but I imagine he'd be cathing shit from his felllow firefighters non stop.
D: Oh, my, gosh. This is fantastic! I can't wait for the sequel! Cruelty was amazing and this should be amazing too. I'd hoped there would be a sequel but I guess never really thought you'd make one after Red Lantern started (Not that I don't like Red Lantern, I love that too.)
YEAY!!!! This are great news!!! ^^
I'm so happy that we will be able to read what happened in the lives of Marcus and Reis. and in full colour now ^^
As far as i can figure out. for the pic. Reis is working in construction, Marcus is having a hard time at law school, and for the look on him i bet there will be serious problems between them.. (as with mst couples), most probably Reis went back to drugs use due to labor stress and maybe some co-worker insinuations and has been hiding it from Marcus. And Marcus found out somehow and has second thoughts by now after all the effort he went through, even though he loves Reis he finds it hard to forgive and forget.
Hehehe.. sorry for that.. i guess i got excited and went over the board with that :P hehehehehe
Thanks for letting us know Rukis ^^ and that pic is amazing ^^ (you sure like to spoil us up and treat us nicely ^^)

Can I place a pre-order already?
(needless to say, I'm very happy with Cruelty even if the print itself came out a little muddy in my copy)
I'll be looking forward to your work on the sequel! I trust it's as compelling a script for a graphic novel as the first one was - it has to be, if you plan almost double the pages...

w00t and sweeet. :D You just made a lot of fanboys (like myself) really happy. ;) Your comics (taking from Cruelty and what I've seen so far in Red Lantern) have a perfect balance of plot and smex. You can't have one without the other ...in my humble opinion, which is why you find both in my stories too. :) Good luck and I'm looking forward to every little teasing tidbit. I think adult furry comics might be your calling. ;)
Oh man, I saw how much you seemed to be drawing the characters "for yourself" and knew they weren't gonna go quietly from your consciousness. I had a feeling there would be a sequel. I got my signed copy of Cruelty from you at FF10 and I look forward to getting my paws on a copy of this in 2012.
Their expressions say so much. I may be reading too much into it, but...I can sort of see the potential social problems of a blue collar/white collar mix relationship, and the implications of pride as income starts to become a potential issue. Considering that your comics so far have always touched upon some sort of social thing, will Unconditional be different?
Can't WAIT for it!
Can't WAIT for it!
D'aaawwww!! i cant waaaaiiitt now!! D: na i can i have some things to keep me busy..
But just like every one else. We cant wait to see some teasers!! <3

Rukis, I am excited.
I may be straight, but I couldn't help but become connected to these two wonderful characters you've developed.
I'm already looking forward to picking up a hard copy of this one. And Cruelty, if I can find it somewhere.
As always, you've done a great job on this piece.
The characters' poses seem very natural, and I imagine it must be tricky when you're dealing with the legs of anthro animals...
Their expressions are very subtle, but I'm not really getting a warm vibe. On the contrary, they both seem a bit irked at each other. A nice way to introduce or hint at conflict, but now you've got me wondering what's going on!
Keep up the great work!

ohh!! i can't wait!!! i can honestly say, without a doubt, that i'm bouncing on my toes with anticipation for this comic. the first one made me excited and teary eyed in the end, and i can't wait to see what'll happen to me in the second, more importantly the characters. i really love them and i can't wait to see what happens next!
I'm greatly looking forward to it! I've always been a bit of a hopeful romantic, so all during Cruelty and especially at the end I was rooting for those two to get together and form something beautiful and long lasting. It'll be great to see how their future turns out.
Judging by the picture and the comments, here are some random thoughts/words.
Tension, Conflict, Break up, Cheating, Separate ways due to different point of views how to live Life, Secrets, Black mail, Job loss, violence, rough un-enjoyable sex, rape possibly, make up, understanding, renewed friendship, fake boy friends, and... wait for it marriage.

I am absolutely pleased to hear that you have decided to continue the story of these two extremely well done characters.
I don't mind waiting because I know that good things will come with time.
That and Red Lantern is just so amazing I do not know if I can handle two ridiculously awesome comics at once!

Nice to hear that you've decided to continue on in the "Cruelty" world. One of the reasons there's been such an outpouring of support is because you created characters that people care about. Sure there are many furry commics out there with adult themes and/or yiff, but very few actually succeed at effective characterization. Unless you actually put "pencil to paper" again, those characters will only continue to exist in the original work and in your head.
OMG! This is a MUST! I'd love for you too finish it. The first novel was great, and what's good about this--if you decide to contunie the novel--is that you're able to develope your characters even more--put them in situations weather they're good or bad and determen what kind of hard ship your characters will have. It would also give you the chance really show the strain--if any--on they're realationship after Marcus' incident with his drug use.
Good luck, cheers!
Good luck, cheers!
Does not feel like a year now. But I guess it has been! I still remember when you posted this and never once did I think this would ever match up to your other stories, Cruelty and Red Lantern (at the time of this post). But it has, in a very amazing, heartfelt, and touching way. Bravo Rukis! And thank you for making this.

Late again, but whenever I explain how much Reis and Marcus mean to me, it helps me to stray from my usual state of angst and worry. I'm not too sure just what on Earth I worry about... But I do. And seeing Marcus and Reis comforting each other, providing limitless amounts of love for each one another, makes me sometimes melt or just stare for hours in satisfied contentment. Sure I have plenty of good, loyal, life long friends who help me. But it's not the same as being held by somebody you long for and adore with every fiber of your being, somebody who you can say "I love you." To one thousand times and over, somebody who would travel to end of the univervese if it meant it could be beneficial to you, or if it meant that the eternal love between the two of you could remain standing strong for the rest of your lives. Somebody who would never leave your side even if they were lit on fire, somebody that doesn't know the meaning of the word "Temporary.". Somebody that will never betray you, always love you beyond measure, that will always know they're way around your head and heart, will never reject any words of affection, that will always return the unmistakable vibes sent by you to keep an unbreakable infinite bond and somebody who says "I love you." Often to make sure you know it. Somebody whom when you share a kiss, is just as passionate, loving and incredible as the last. Somebody who makes not your stomach flip, your legs like thin lead, or your forehead wet, but makes you feel complete in every possible way.
