The autumn forest Barbary is so named because its eggs hatch in the fall and the young whelps possess coppery markings of varying shades to blend in with the dead leaves. As they age, however, the coppery markings brighten into vivid blood-red, pumpkin orange, goldenrod, and even sometimes white or bright blue.
