Falling. It’s something a person does only once in their lifetime, and not everyone falls. Now when I say fall, I don’t mean to trip over something or to become merely depressed with life. I’m talking about a complete collapse of one’s self. An event that changes the course of a person life. Takes them and makes them into something truly good, or corrupts them into something foul and evil. These are the events that spawn superhero’s and villains.
But not every fall leads to such extreme’s.
Such an example is James. His fall started with a simple piece of information. He was not born, but created. A product of a company, made only as a prototype to see if a true AI could be created that was capable of growing older, learning, and truly loving. Everything a real person can do. Meant to usher in a new age of AI soldiers to replace true humans and furs on the front lines and provide a defense against the supernatural threat that looms over the world.
At first he shrugged it off as nothing more than a crazy joke someone wanted to pull on him, but the doubt had already entered his mind and pressed on him that it was true. It nagged at him in the back of his mind day and night. Bringing up dreams, or perhaps memories, of a time when he was still brand new. A time when he was poked and prodded and had all sorts of tests done to him that would leave a person fearing doctors for the rest of their lives. It grew to a fevered pitch until he had to find out if it was true.
It was. He was designed from the ground up using synthetically created DNA. Silver replaced the Carbon in the backbone of his DNA structure that held the genetic base pairs together and, coupled with a few other metals, made him capable of being programmed to be anything that company saw fit. The best part was, the genetic structure acted exactly like normal DNA and was undistinguishable from the natural thing. Though it did render him sterile and the silver dominates the color of his eyes. So not only was he a fake, but he was a very well made fake.
The realization that he was nothing more than a sophisticated toy is what caused him to fall. His life spun out of control and he became destructive to himself. The company that made him decided it was time to pull the plug on this little project of theirs. Only, there was a problem. A few years back he was in a struggle for his life against four armed thugs that wanted to kill him and rape the woman that was his girlfriend at the time. As a result he was shot in a few places and nearly didn’t survive. The doctors told him they had no problems fixing the damage done to his heart from the bullet that went through and lodged in his spine. But he hasn’t a clue that he died on that operating table twice. Something the company was also unaware of when they sent the kill signal. It was enough that it ceased the control the company had on him without killing him, but it was enough to cause a reboot to his mind freeing him from their control.
Now this is where the story gets, complicated. He has two choices he can follow in his newfound life.
The first path is to ignore the fact he’s a construct and find a way to validate that he has a soul and that he’s more than just a machine.
The second path he can take is one of acceptance. That he accepts he’s created instead of born and to use it to his advantage against the very company that made him.
Which path he would have chosen is unknown at best. But suffice it to say, the universe is very keen to know which path is better, and has split time at this junction. On one path he will validate his existence as Eclipse. On the other he will attempt to unravel the secrets of the universe as his project name Genesis. Will time ever flow back into one point, and when it does, which version shall win out in the end?
We’ll just have to wait and see.
