I was going to get an artist table at Acen (an anime con) and had nothing but anthro art. Very silly. I decided to make a few new pieces for it. The trouble is, I didn't feel like making anime. I'm mad for mythology, and so that's what you're getting.
Info about the kappa can be found here [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kappa_%28folklore%29 ] Have a looky.
I still have the original for sale, if anyone's interested. Prints available too :3

I just recently read a book where one of the stories involved Kappa that had moved to the tallest mountain, where they lived in huts of ice. They wanted to be somewhere that tricksters could not find them and force them to spill the water from their heads; somewhere they could finally be in piece.
This is exactly how I pictured the Kappa to look. Obviously, Japanese folklore gives us that description, but I think your piece here captured them really well. Amazingly done!

this is awesome.
very remnant of my old favorite KAB commercial ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av-CPJxziLs )

my knee jerk reaction is that this is an awesome, powerful picture, which though at first may seem to be only saying one simple thing, is actually more nuanced (for example, i took it to partly allude to the erosion of humanity's myths that represent their wonder at the power of nature, due mainly to the increasing distance put between us and said ecology by our increasingly industrialised society [symbolised by the refuse of modern man]... dunno' if that's what you were going for though)... probably can't trust my judgement though, since i'm a furry
This is absolutely wonderful! When I lived in Japan you would see scenes like this--not the kappa--but streams you could tell were once beautiful, and bridges that were once well crafted, choked up with garbage. This is an amazing piece that utilizes the past and folklore to comment on the real present. You should enter this into an environmental art competition.
I feel like everything I had to say has already been said. The only thing new to add to this is I wish Neil Gaiman could see this. You blend the mythic age with modern times seamlessly and evoke emotion like a visual bard of the highest class. I actually have tears right now. Fantastic work and seriously...thank you.
From what little I knew of kappas, it wasn't till after I read the wiki about them.... then that is when it hit me, what the title really meant.
Despite all the bad things they are known for, to show respect, even if it was to simply refill the water in its head when it was powerless, would mean the world to a kappa. To the point that it would devote itself to the person who made the gesture.
And then, here, to find people showing total disrespect. And then to be reminded about it constantly... this is one of the few pictures that I've come across, filled with more meaning than I can put words to. I don't think you could have done any better.
